OHAKUNE

SWIMMING BATHS COMMITTEE. A meeting of the above committee was held al the Council Chambers, Ohakune, on Wednesday, October 13, under the chairmanship of Dr. Jordan. Present were Messrs. Nation, Torepe and Mahony. Mesdames Cuiran, Hardie and Goile and Mr. Morrow (secretary). Apologies lor absence were received from Mr. and Mrs. Robertson, Mrs. Jordan and Messrs. Wodward and Little. The district Health Inspector (Mr. W. H. Roy) reported to (ho committee and advised that they should communicate with the Taihape and Hunterville Swimming Clubs, to ascertain the costs of materials, etc.

It. was proposed by Mrs. Goile, seconded by Mr. Mahony, that an art union be run offering a prize of 15 alluvial gold for which tickets would be sold at 6(1 each. The proposal was carried, as was also a further proposal by Mr. Nation seconded by Mr. Morrow, that in the meantime books containing 1000 art union tickets be purchased. On the movement of Mr. Torepe, seconded by Mr. Mahony, it was decided that the closing date for tlii.s art union lie December 11 and the drawing date December 17, in St. Joseph’s Hall, when a social evening could be held.

The motion al present on the books that all sports bodies in the district be approached for a donation was proposed by Mr. Nation to be suspended in the meantime, the movement being seconded by Mrs. Goile.

Mr. Torepe proposed float a queen carnival be run to raise funds and the proposal was carried. It was further proposed that there be three queens—railways, sports and country. This was carried and Mrs. Goile undertook to arrange for the country queen, Mrs. Curran and Mr. Mahony the sorts queen, and Mr. Nation and Mr. Jordan the railways queen, the organisers to report progress at the next meeting.

Each queen will be allotted colours and the borough council will be asked to allow the committee to use their flag-staff to indicate the respective positions of the queens each week. Each penny shall count as one vote.

On the motion of Mrs. Goile, it was decided that the suggestion to canvass with a subscription list be held over in the meantime. Mr. Mahony suggesting that a voluntary list he opened. This was seconded by Mr. Nation and carried. On the proposal of Mr. Maliony the committee decided to communicate with the member for the district, with a view to seeking his assistance in an endeavour to secure a grant from the Government.

The following were nominated as further members of the committee and were accepted as such: Mr. and Mrs. Moellier, Mrs. Presnell, Mrs Whyman, Mr. Blyth, Mr. C. Thomas and Mr. Dunning. It was reported at the close of the meeting by Mr. Robertson that the Railway Hall is not available for committee meetings.

The thanks of the committee were tendered to Mr. Roy for his attendance and report, and on the proposal of Mr. Torepe a special meeting is being held in the Borough Councit Chambers on Friday October 22, to receive reports and discuss urgent business.

CORONATION CELEBRATIONS. A meeting of the above committee was held on Friday evening last at the Council Chambers, Ohakune. when Mr. L. W. Nation (Mayor) presided. Reports were received from various members in regard to arrangements. The chairman reported that \ir. H. Thompson had generously donated 700 toys and the offer of a free picture should rain stop the proceedings. It was resolved that the secretary write and thank Mr. Thompson for his generous offer. Arrangements were made to distribute .700 buttons with Their Majesties on to Pokaka, Horopito, Umumuri, Rangataua, Karioi, Convent and Ohakune schools this week. The secretary reported that all the above-named schools had been invited to attend and in all probability there will be special trains arriving at Ohakune Junction about 9.30 a.m. from Pokaka and Karioi. The departure of the trains will be about 5 p.m. The procession will leave the Junction at about 11 a.m. led by Mr. J. France (drum major), followed by a piper, then the school children, decorated bicycles, the band, Women’s Institute, Scouts, R.S.A. and any others wishing to march. Next will come the fire brigade, decorated vehicles, break-down lorry and cars. There will be 700 bags containing fruit, lollies and cakes distributed to (lie children and tills work will be carried out by the Women's Institute. Arrangements have been made to do everything possible to make it a real outing for the children. There will be cycling, running, and many athletic events.

A mock court with two very able judges and policemen will also be conducted and only light tines made. The funds from the mock court will probably be for the proposed swimming baths.

There will also be Highland dancing. Hot and cold water will be available on the grounds. Every organisation appears to be pulling its weight to make the long promised day a most successful one The response of local business people has been excellent and the committee is under a debt of gratitude to them.
