BETTER MOTORING

WANGANUI A.A. REVIEW OF YEAR’S WORK INCREASE IN MEMBERSHIP A good financial position and a substantial increase in the membership during the past year were reported to the annual meeting of the Auiomooile Association (Wanganui) last evening, Mr A. S. Burgess presiding, those present were Messrs J. Aylmer, T. Dix, P. D. England, S. G. Wnitta/ L. Chisholm, G. Meuli, E. M. Silk, jn. R. Bain, T. c. Kincaid (members of the executive) and a number of members.

In moving the adoption of the annual report, the president said he could remember tnat several years ago the association had as its oojective a membership of 2000. The present membership was 2984, so it was now the duty ot the executive to aim at 5000. With the number of motorists in the district this figure should be possible, although it would take several years to carry out. The new executive, when it met later in the evening, would have the pleasure of electing 106 new members for the month. In this connection the patrois were doing good work. Dealing with road improvements, Mr Burgess said that the time was not far distant when there would be a tar-sealed road all the way from Wanganui to Wellington. Good progress was being maintained on the work of reconstructing and improving the Wanganui-Raetihi highway. Mr W. A. izard suggested tnat more interest would be taxon in the association if the executive were changed each year. This suggestion was tnat three members should retire each year and should not be eligible for reelection. This would ensure the provision of fresh blood. Another suggestion which occurred to him was that there should be only one association in the North Island, with «i number of branches. He suggested that the attendants on paming areas in city streets should be dispersed as, in his opinion, they served no useful purpose. Mr Burgess said that many members of the association had expressed their appreciation of the provision of . attendants at parking areas. ) The secretary said that a city traffic inspector had informed him that he would not like to see the parking patrois done away with. The president said that for some time difficulty had been experienced in securing sufficient members for the executive.

The following officers were elected for the year:—President, Mr A. S. Burgess (re-elected); vice-presidents, Mr J. Aylmer; executive, Messrs N. R. Bain, L. Chisholm, T. Dix, P. D. England, G. Meuli, E. M. Silk, S. G. Whittali, W. A. Izard and Dr. E. E. Porritt; district delegates, Messrs A. M. Little (Feilding), and T. C. Kin. caid (Taihape); hon. auditor, Mr T. Ballingall. The matter of electing delegates from Marton, Waverley and Bulls was left to the incoming committee to finalise. Mr P. E. Higginbottom expressed his appreciation of the service he had received from time to time from automobile associations in both the North and South Islands. . Mr W. A. Izard expressed appreciation of the assistance given by the as- L sociation patrols whom, he said, were always out to do their best for members. On his motion a vote of thanks was passed to the patrols. s
