WANGANUI BOARD MEETS
The monthly meeting of the Wanganui Education Board was held yesterday, Mr E. F. Hemingway presiding. Those present were Colonel J. H Whyte, Messrs A. S. Coleman, W. T* Benefield, M. H. Oram, N. Annabell. R. Dukeson, P. Monro, J. W. Batchelar and I. W. Mudford. The chairman reported that during the month further progress had been made in the matter of consolidating schools and members and the secretary had discussed proposals witn parents in a number of districts Since the beginning of last year, 18 schools had been closed under the board’s consolidation policy, eigr.' schools were in favour of consolidation, but for which schemes had not been arranged, and nine other coneyance services had been arranged, most of which were in lieu of establishing new schools. In addition, several districts were at present considering consolidation. An application for an addition to its supplementary grant by the committee of the Intermediate School was declined. The residents of the Silverhope district were granted the use of the old school building and school grounds for social purposes on the usual conditions. An application was reecived from the Wanganui Boys’ Cricket Association for a grant of £25 to assist it in the purchase of cricket material. The request was declined, members expressing their sympathy with the objects of the association and regret at their inability to make a donation. The architect, Mr E. R. Hodge, reported inter alia: — Works Completed. Gonville: Painting of the two school buildings, outbuildings and clinic has been completed. Hunterville: a bus garage has been erected and made ready for occupation. The concrete floor and painting has yet to be done. Silverhope: A bus garage has been erected, concrete floor and painting has yet to be done. Fordell: The whole of the work in connection with the erection of a new classroom has been completed. Waitotara: The whole of the painting work has been completed and the buildings made ready for occupation. Kauangaroa. Native: Painting of the school, residence and outbuildings has been completed. National Park: The school and outbuildings have been painted. Works in Hand. Queen's Park: The concrete foundations have been laid and a start made on the erection ot the new room in brick. Ratana Pa: The old school building has been raised and is now being remodelled and additions made thereto. Kauangaroa Native: A large concrete area is being laid down. A septic - tank and adequate drainage system is being installed. Parewanui: The extensions to the teacher’s residence are well in hand. Manunui: Repairs to the buildings are being effected to the exterior and interior of the buildings painted and decorated. Rapanui: Painting of the school and outbuildings is in hand. Kaitoke: Painting of the new shelter sheds is being effected. The interior of the teacher’s residence is being repapered and painted. Manutahi: A new drainage sump is being sunk at the teacher’s residence. Parikino Native: Materials have been made ready for various works at the teacher’s residence.
