DEAN OF AUCKLAND

FIRST APPOINTMENT MADE [Par Press Association. ] AUCKLAND, Oct. 19. By resolution of the Anglican Synod, Canon W. Fancourt, vicar of the cathedral church and parish of St. Mary’s, with appointed first Dean of Auckland. The resolution was moved by Mr. C. J. Tunks, who said it simply proposed to increase the dignity of the vicar of the cathedral church, and parish. The legacy given to the diocese for a cathedral and the steps to be taken in regard to that matter made it appropriate that the chapter should be completed by the appointment of its head, which was the dean. It was also appropriate that the cathedral church vicar should be appointed to the office. Mr. Tunks added that Canon Fancourt had practically carried out the duties of dean in the past and he would worthily fulfil the new position. The motion was carried with acclamation.

In expressing thanks Canon Fancourt expressed gratitude at the consideration received from Archbishop Averill during his eight years as vicar of St. Mary’s.
