GERMAN SCHOLARSHIPS

FOR BRITISH STUDENTS GIFT OF HAMBURG MERCHANT Received Oct. 19, 10.30 p.m. LONDON, Oct. 19. An anonymous Hamburg merchant, as a thanksoffering for the German Rhodes scholarships at Oxford, has founded a number of annual scholarships, each valued at 3000 reichsmarks, to enable students from universities in Britain and the Empire to have a year’s study in Germany. They are called Hanseatic scholarships and will be awarded without examination by recommendation following an interview. The founder hopes that they will further closer relations and understanding between Germany and Britain and promote a consciousness of European solidarity. The same donor founded three annual prizes' valued at 10,000 reichsmarks in Britain, Holland and Scandinavia for distinguished work in literature and arts.
