WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
MEETING AT TURANGAARERE Mrs Redman presided over a small meeting of the Turangaarere Women’s Institute on the 15th., when a good deal of business had to be discussed. It was decided as so many members were absent to begin the firstaid classes in the New Year.
Mrs Anderton kindly offered to donate a cake to help the sick fund and this was gratefully accepted. At the next meeting there will be a bring-and-buy stall in order to raise funds for the Christmas tree. It was suggested there should be only two hostesses in future, from Hihitahi and Turangaarere alternatively. Seed potatoes will be distributed at the next meeting. As Mrs Bartell is in hospital, Mrs Newton will take her place as delegate to the council meeting. A delightful afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, followed by a demonstration of wood fibre flowers by Miss Bartell, for which she was warmly thanked.
On November 6 there will be a gift afternoon for Miss Thora Millen, who is shortly to be married. This will be
held at the home of Mrs Murdoch, Hihitahi, and all members are invitee to attend. The winner of the premier flower competition was Mrs Canton and there was some beautiful handwork shown in the display. For next month the competition will be: Jar of flowers (one colour) and Christmas novelty; roll call, re'•ipe for summer drink; hostesses, .'ksdames Nuttall and Coleman. KAI IVVI INSTITUTE The members of the Kai Iwi Women’s Institute held their meeting on Thursday, 14th. inst. The meeting opened with the singing of the NewZealand Anthem, followed by Aspirations. Mrs Goldsbury presided and extended a cordial welcome to all present, especially to Mr McKay, an ex-schoolmaster of the Kai Iwi district, who later on in the afternoon entertained the members with a very interesting talk on his travels and experiences in other countries. At the conclusion of his talk he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Business then proceeded with the election of delegates for the forthcoming federation meeting to be held at Westmere on the 22nd. Mrs Huwyler was appointed reporting delegate and Mrs Bruntlett voting delegate. A bring-and-buy stall was very well patronised and the sum of 30s was taken in aid of the Chrisfmas leper fund. The hostesses for the day were Mesdamcs Huwyler, Wilson, Hocken and Miss Wilson. The winners of the competitions were: Tall vase of flowers, Mrs C. Morrison 1, Mrs J. Morrison 2, Mrs E. Bruntlett 3; scones, Mrs C. Morrison 1, Mrs E. Bruntlett 2, Mrs Wilson 3. The usual day for the November meeting will be postponed until the
18th. on account of the show being held on that date. The competitions are an article costing not more than 2s and a floating bowl of flowers (the bowl to be a sandwich cake tin). The hostesses appointed are Mesdames Burns, Bruntlett, J. Morrison and C. Morrison.
