BOXING AT ALTON

TARANAKI JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS . Although commenced shortly alter 8 p.m., the Taranaki junior championship programme did not conclude until shortly before midnight in the Alton Hall on Monday. Excellent, .boxing was witnessed. Mr L. Hunt [made the introductions and Mr R. W. Haddow refereed. Mr H. Palmer was gong steward, Mr A. McAsey timekeeper, Dr. W. T. Simmons medical officer, Messrs Cate and S. Goodwin seconds, and Mr W. Brosnan and Mr C. J. Gardiner supervised the programme.

Mr F. Ramsbottom, Mayor of Patea and president of the Patea Boxing Association, expressed the Alton Club’s appreciation of the good support given the fixture. The elimination bouts were decided as follow:—J. Rodley (Alton), 4st. 4ibs., beat J. Schwass (Manutahi), 4st. lllbs; D. Hurley (Alton), 4.2, beat J. Goodwin (Hawera), 4.6: M. Hurley (Alton), 5.13, beat H. Maddern (Hawera), 6.13; J. Moller (Hawera), 9.7, beat J. Calder (Matapu), 9.7; F. Couchman (Alton), 10.7, beat C. .Wanna (Hawera), 10.0: L. Nicholls (Otakeho), 9.9, beat C. Copestake j(Stratford), 9.7; L. Amon (Alton), J 1.9, beat M. Woods (Hawera), 11.0; G. Pepperill, 11.4, beat J. Jennings !(Hawera), 11.5; B. Moller, 9.5, beat J. Moller, 9.7: G. Moore (Tahora). 11.12, a bye; Maisin (Otakeho), a bye. Finals zj. Hurley (Alton), 4.2, beat J. Rodley (Alton), 4.4. Hurley reserved his attack for the final round after Rodley had made the fight through the previous rounds. A high speed was maintained until the final gong, Hurley winning narrowly. G. Moller, 6.0, beat N. Rodley (Alton), 5.9. Moller showed superior ringcraft, but be was gamely resisted by Rodley, who gamely bored in to register heavily. Moller's wider experience served him in good stead and he finished with a clear margin. M. Hurley beat T. Goodwin after a cautious exchange. Hurley being wary of Goodwin’s longer reach. Hurley early established a points lead, which ho maintained despite Goodwin’s third round effort to overtake the margin. > D. Rodley (Alton), 7.7, beat D. Brewer (Hawera), 7.12 a. Honours were even in the first session and Rodley began to pile up a points lead with a penetrating attack. Brewer fought a rearguard action and Rodley maintained the pressure to win with plenty to spare. G. Moore (Tahora), knocked out L. Amon (Alton) in the first 15 seconds of the bout. Moore drove straight in with a hurricane attack and Amon dropped through the ropes from a burst of in-fighling. Amon claimed the fight on a foul, but the appeal was not upheld and Moore was given the laurel. B. Flower, 9.1, beat J. King. 9.5, after a cautious exchange over three rounds. Both boys showed polish and good timing, but Flower’s widei knowledge earned him the decision with a good margin. • V/. Moller (Otakeho) beat L. Nicholls (Hawera) in a hard-hitting battle that was a highlight of the programme. Nicholls had all the advantage but. Moller, using a well-timed rnd methodical delivery, steadied t-'icholls’ forceful aggression. Nicholls connected repeatedly but Moller used every opening to reply. Nicholls took a count of time, but recovered to maintain the high speed and attack strongly Moller’s precision was undisturbed, however, and he gained the palm, but the applause was Shared. . S. Couchman ‘Alton) beat A. Couchman ‘Alton) in a light exchange in which both boys reflected food training and a polished tcchn quo. Fast footwork, attack and

counter was evenly maintained to the gong. Waisin (Hawera) was awarded a technical knock-out decision over G. Pepperill in the middleweight final. Pepperill opened the fight with a left and right attack and Waisin retreated cautiously, delivering occasional heavy blows to head and body.
