SPRING SKI-ING
MARVELLOUS ON RUAPEHU. AUSTRIAN EXPERT’S VIEW. CHATEAU TONGARIRO, Oct. 18. “Spring ski-ing on Ruapehu is marvellous. It compares very favourably with any country in the world,” said Ernest Skardarasy, the noted Austrian ski expert, who is making a tour of inspection of the leading New Zealand ski resorts. Mr. Skardarasy said the' snow on Ruapehu was excellent and there were slopes suitable for all classes of skiers from the novice to the expert. He was particularly intrigued by the crater lake. Previous to this week, he had never before skied on a volcano or in a crater. Ruapehu, he said, gave him the impression, owing io the variety of its ridges, of being a group of mountains rather than a single massif. “There is a much longer downhill run on Ruapehu than anywhere in Australia,” he said, “and, with proper instruction from a qualified ski instructor. Npw Zealand should be able to produce a strong team for the next winter Olympic Games. There are certainly facilities available here for Ihe training of Olympic teams of the world in preparation for the Games. European teams would be glad to have somewhere to train in the European summer and autumn before the Games,”.
