N.Z. CRICKETERS

MATCH AT COLOMBO TOURISTS’ GOOD PRACTICE (From the Special Correspondent of the United Press Association with the team.) Received Oct. 17, 7.5 p.m. COLOMBO, Oct. 16. New Zealand played a drawn oneway match against a team representing All Ceylon, with a view to keeping the players in form for the tour of Australia. The New Zealand team was Vivian, Moloney, Wallace, Hadlee, Lamason, Donnelly, Roberts, Lowry, Weir and Carson. The New Zealand spin bowlers performed creditably in the stifling heat on an easy wicket, being supported by excellent fielding. Vivian bowled twenty overs very steadily. Donnelly’s consistency was shown by live maidens in nine overs. Moloney, spinning the ball well, twice took two wickets in one over. Vivian, Moloney, Roberts, Hadlee and Lowry all made smart catches.

Saram, formerly an Oxford University blue, played a brilliant innings, combining quick footwork with varied stroke play. Ceylon left the tourists only an hour and a-half to bat. It was impossible to -orce a win, although all the batsmen were aggressive. Vivian gave a delightful display, hitting eight fours, and Weir got two sixes off successive balls. Wallace hit live fours and one six.

The players were the guests at lunch of Sir Andrew Caldecott, Governor of Ceylon, and were entertained in the evening at a display of devil dancing at Mount Lavinia. The game was played on a pretty palm-ringed ground before a picturesque, enthusiastic crowd of whiterobed natives. All Ceylon lost eight wickets for 221 and declare/ (De Saram 90). Bowling, Moloney took four for 53, (Vivian 68 not out, Wallace 26, and for 12.

New Zealand lost five for 177 (Vian 68 not out, Wallace 26, and Weir 25 not out).
