PAINTING

Never put new paint on a dirty surface. If the old paint is not to be removed, wash it well with soapy water, to which a little turpentine has been added, and let it dry thoroughly. When painting skirtings or picture rails, hold a piece of thin wood or thick cardboard against the wall above to prevent marking it. A piece of cork glued in the centre will make it easier to hold and move. Never dip the paint brush into the paint more than a third of its depth, and do not take up too much paint at a time. Draw the bristles against the edge of the tin as you take it out. Always paint the direction of the grain of the wood, with a backward and forward movement, and always work from the left to righ and away from the light.
