The four-year-old Galiio, favourite to-day for the King George Handicap at the Avondale races, led into the straight in that race but suddenly fell. It was ascertained that he had broken both hind legs and he had to be destroyed. Had he stayed on his feet he should have won.

Gallio, a four-year-old chestnut horse by General Latour from Prodice, a half-sister to Ammon Ra. He was bred by Mr. W. H. Tims, of Te Awamutu, and was submitted at the 1935 yearling sales and passed in, being purchased later in the day by Mrs. S. L. Parsons, of Wanganui, for 250gns. Gallio won the Great Northern Foal Stakes as a two-year-old, and he started off his three-year-old career with the Avondale Guineas, Great Northern Guiseas, Trentham Stakes and Harcourt Stakes, only to break down on the eve of the New Zealand Derby (won by Wild Chase). So bad was his condition that his connections despaired of his recovery, and it is understood that he was returned to his breeder. However, it was in the colours of Mr. M. H. Tims that Gallio made his reappearance at the Pakuranga Hunt Club meeting at Ellerslie in August after being off the scene for ten months, and he finished second, beaten a head, to'Maori Song in the sprint. He carried 8.13 to win the Epsom Handicap at the Ellerslie spring meeting a week ago, and he was the popular pick for the President’s Handicap, which was won, so strange is coincidence at times, by Jonathan, who carries Mrs. Parsons’ colours. It is reported that on the day of Gallio’s breakdown Mrs. Parsons was in receipt of a letter from Australia requesting her to put a price on the General Latour colt, and it is easy to imagine that she could have asked, and received, 3000gns. for Gallio. Twelve months ago Gallio was carrying all before him. To-day he is a memory.—“ Kestrel.”
