COUNCIL MEETING HELD I (From Our Own Correspondent) FEILDING, Oct. 15. ! The monthly meeting o£ the Oroua , County Council was held at Feilding 1 yesterday, Mr. A. Campbell, chairman, presiding. There were also present: ! Crs. A. B. Shannon, O. McElroy, T. Green, W. Breenhow, and B. McLeod. An apology for absence was received from Cr. W. McLennan. Correspondence The following correspondence was dealt with: — From the Main Highways Board, ■ forwarding financial authority for seal--1 ing work at Bunny thorpe. The chair--1 man stated that this concerned the ! sealing of the highway fronting the ■ Glaxo factory at Bunnythorpe. From the District Engineer, New ■ Zealand Railways, advising that the ■ level crossing north of Kakariki 1 bridge had been closed and that the i new deviation had been brought into , use.—Received.

From the Rt. Hon. Prime Minister conveying the thanks of the Government for co-operation in connection with his appeal for the King George V Memorial Fund. —Received. From the Post and Telegraph Department, asking that authority be given to the Feilding Borough Council to grant permission to the department to carry loads contravening regulation 12 of the Traffic Regulations, 1936. —Agreed to. From the New Zealand Standards Institute, advising that attention is being given to projects which are affected by local body by-laws and asking for a copy of the council’s bylaws.—Agreed to supply. From the Commissioner of Crown Lands, advising that it is now proposed to vest in the Crown the river protection reserve at the eastern approach to the lower gorge bridge.— The chairman said that the council's view was that the control of the reserve should be vested in the council and it was agreed to advise the commissioner accordingly.

From the chief surveyor, asking for the council’s consent to the proclamation of a road, that portion of the State highway which runs through the Ferry Reserve. —Agreed to. From the secretary, New Zealand Centennial Exhibition, forwarding a copy of the "Business Prospectus" which has been issued for the use of intending exhibitors.—Received. From the Mayor, Palmerston North, inviting the council to be represented at a meeting to be held in Palmerston North, in connection with the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition. It was decided that the council be represented. From'the Manawatu County Council forwarding a report of a conference held to consider the question of amalgamation of counties. —Received, and it was agreed to forward a copy of the report to the Counties’ Conference. Treasurer's Report The treasurer, Mr. R. L. Harding, reported as follows on the iinances of the council: Rates outstanding previous three years to 31/3/1937, Native, 1454 Os 2d; Crown, £123; European, £419 14s 2d; total, £996 14s 4d. European arrears: Collected, £174 7s sd; arrears outstanding to date £822 6s lid. Rates levied for the current year, £15,382 9s Hd; collected to date, £1857 14s 6d; outstanding to date, £13,524 15s sd.

Riding Accounts: Expenditure to on maintenance (western riding), £2206 14s sd; presented for payment, £227 16s 9d; expenditure on maintenance (eastern riding) £2530 9s Id; presented for payment, £9B 6s 9d. Bank balance: General account, Dr. £3386 ss. Engineer’s Report The county engineer, Mr. R. L. Harding, submitted the following report on the works undertaken during the past month: — Eastern Riding: No. 2 crushing plant has been in operation during the month, and gravel has been supplied for maintenance work on the various roads as follows: Bunny-thorpe-Ashhurst Road, 257 cubic yards; Ashhurst Township, 163 cubic yards; Pohangina Road, 228 cubic

yards; reserve dump at Ashhurst, 542 cubic yards; total, 1195 cubic yards. Repairs have been effected to bitumen surfacing at Taonui and Bunnythorpe railway crossings. Taonui road from Reid’s line to Colyton has been scarified, reformed and rolled. The contract for construction of Reid’s line bridge has been satisfactorily completed. The approaches have been lilled and gravelled, and the bridge is now open to traffic.

Western riding: The No. 1 crushing plant has been brought into operation again, and line crushed river gravel is being supplied for the preparation work on Makino Road. It is necessary to dump this gravel on the roadside, as we have not yet received the necessary authority to permit the work to with. This procedure will Increase the cost of the work somewhat, but the season is so far advanced that I am compelled to take this step to expedite the work, otherwise it would be impossible to complete the sealing this season. The foundations of the small bridge on Kimbolton Road near Cheltenham have been undermined, and are now being repaired. Makura Road has been scarified, re-shaped and rolled. Three new culverts have been put in on Reu Reu Road, and about 400 yards of gravel have been used in improving access to the northern end of this road.
