Fine weather and a very fast track favoured the first day of the Avondale Jockey Club's second spring meeting, held on the Avondale course to-day. There was a large attendance. Gallio was quickly in the lead after a good start. Passing the seven furlongs post Con Fuoco ran up on the outside into second position. Gallio carried on, running past the half-mile two lengths ahead of Kiltowyn, ConFuoco, Tybalt, Fersen and Jonathan. Entering the straight Gallio was just ahead of Kiltowyn and Con Fuoco but the leader suddenly fell. Kiltowyn led at the distance but Jonathan finished well on the rails to beat him by a length, with Con Fuoco a similar distance away, third. SPRING HANDICAP. Orate began brilliantly and led into the straight from Tosh and Triune, who eventually finished fourth. Tray Bit led the rest. Crooning is an older half-sister to Prival, who ran well in an earlier race.
