GOVERNMENT AND BANKS MR KYLE’S QUERY [ Per Press Association. ] WELLINGTON, Oct. 15. The House met at 10.30 a.m., when the third reading of the Nelson Diocesan Trust Board Empowering Bill (Mr H. Atmore) was passed. Mr H. S. S. Kyle (Riccarton) gave notice to ask the Prime Minister when the decision of the Labour caucus regarding the taking over of the trading banks would be made public, and would the Prime Minister give the banks sufficient time to make representations to wind-up their trading business in New Zealand.

The Speaker advised Mr Kyle that the question would have to be considerably modified.

Replying to an urgent question by Mr Morgan Williams (Kaiapoi) as to whether the Government had power to decide the price paid to its butterfat suppliers during the season when a proprietary dairy company had disposed of its business, the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. Lee Martin, said that as the law provided adequate machinery for the settlemeni of such claims the Government could not make an arbitary decision in matters of this nature.

Two days’ leave of absence was granted to Mr T. H. McCombs, one day to Mr T. D. Burnett, and one day to Mr K. J. Holyoake on account ot urgent public business.
