Patterson, one of the three ratings drowned off Karaka Bay, near Tamaki, during the Diomede Cup race on September 30, was held at Waikumete cemetery. Patterson’s body was found on the western shore of Brown’s Island on Wednesday morning. Prior to the graveside ceremony a service was conducted by the port chaplain, Rev. H. K. At the cemetery the service was conducted by the senior chaplain at the naval base, Rev. G. T. Robson, of the Philomel. There was a large attendance and many wreaths had been sent. Bluejackets from the various ships lined the entrance to the cemetery and after the cortege had passed marched with their officers to the graveside.
