SOCIAL AND PERSONAL. Miss D. Fawcett and Miss V. Fawcett, of Nelson, are viisting Wanganui. Mr and Mrs McCracken, of Wairoa, Hawke's Bay, are on a visit to Wanganui. Mrs W. Davidson, Kawhatau, Wanganui River, is visiting this city. Rev. E. and Mrs Nicholls are attending the metings of the. New Zealand Baptist Assembly, being held in Christchurch. Mr and Mrs Stevens, Marton, were among the guests staying at the Mid-, land Hotel, Wellington, this week. Miss R. Spence, of Wellington, is spending two weeks’ holiday in Wanganui, and is the guest of Mrs J. Deere, Plymouth Street. Mr and Mrs lan Webster, of Bulls, will be visitors to Wanganui to-day lor the St. George’s School sports.
Mr and Mrs Henry Hay, of Oamaru, who are touring the both islands, are expected to arrive in Wanganui to-day, and will be the guests of Mrs A. McPhail, St. John’s Hill.
The Misses Alexander, Wanganui East, were hostesses at a “kitchen” tea” at their home on Thursday evening in honour of Miss V. Caswell, whose marriage takes place shortly.
Mrs E. W. Broad and Miss Joan Broad left Wanganui on Thursday for Wellington, where they will be spending a holiday as the guests of Mrs Moore, Eastbourne.
Miss Joan Pearson, of Feilding, ano Misses Margaret Hamilton and Rita Boddy, of Wellington, are the guests of Mrs W. F. Butler, Puriri Street, Gonville.
Mrs H. Cook, of Blenheim, is visiting Wanganui and is the guqst of Mr and Mrs F. J. Payne, Aramoho.
Mr and Mrs Uttley, Gonville Avenue, leave to-morrow on a three weeks’ motoring holiday in the North. They will travel via the Parapara for Tauranga, where they win stay for a few days with Mrs Uttley's sister, Mrs Jack Fox, afterwards visiting Auckland and Rotorua.
Mrs W. Healey, Gonvile, and her daughter, Mrs Whiteman, accompanied by Mr and Mrs Jeffries, left early in the week on a motor tour to Napier, Gisborne, and as far as the north of Auckland. They intend returning by way of Tauranga and Taupo.
Miss Edith Lyttelton, better known as the novelist, “G. B. Lancaster,” will visit New Zealand this month, according to a message from Sydney, where she is staying at present. She will arrive in Auckland by the Awatea on October 25. Miss Lyttelton visited this country more than a year ago to gather material for her latest book, “Promenade,” which is written on similar lines to her former success,
“Pageant,” and deals with life in New Zealand. The novelist lived in this country as a child, but has spent the greater part of her life in England, on the Continent, and in America and Canada. She will probably go on to America after her visit. ENGAGEMENTS The engagement is announced of Violet Ada, second daughter of Mr and Mrs F. Wood, Alma Road, Wanganui, to Norman Stott, second son of Mr and Mrs G. Barlow, Koromiko Road, Wanganui. The engagement is announced between Eileen Nancy, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs F. H. Howard, of St. John's Hill, and Claude, younger son of Mr and Mrs W. Taylor, of Rangataua.
