EXPORT OF MEAT

Lamb Trade Record 14 up & LL

CHILLED BEEF EXPANSION Mutton and Pork Decline The tendency o£ Great Britain to absorb larger supplies o£ lamb and chilled beet at the, expense of mutton and frozen beef is again emphasised in the final returns of the meat export season of the Dominion, which closed on September 30. Lamb shipments were a record, while the progress of the chilled beef industry was well maintained, although not on the spectacular scale of the previous year, when the trade was emerging from its infancy. The returns issued by the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board for the year ended September 30 show that 201,105 quarters of chilled beet were exported, an increase of 39.5 per cent. Frozen beef showed a corresponding decline, exports falling to 188,128 quarters from 205,268 quarters in the previous season. Apart from the reopening of the market in Honolulu, which accepted 542 quarters of chilled beef, the whole of the output went to the British market.

A feature of the exports of frozen beef was the increased quantity taken by Japan, approximately 5700 quarters being shipped to the East, an increase of about 4600 quarters. New York returned to the market, but purchased only 1220 quarters, compared with 15,268 quarters taken in 1934-35. Exports of lamb were 447,489 carcases greater at the record figure of 9.187,369. Of the minor markets, Honolulu was easily the best, absorbing 2363 carcases, against 127 in the previous season. Destination of Shipments Shipments of mutton declined by 69,650 carcases to 1,800,570 carcases and pork meats were 2340 carcases lower at 667,104 carcases. Boneless beef shipments increased by 63,908 bags to 299,413 bags. The bulk of the increase went to Britain, but over 4000 bags were sent to New York and Honolulu. New York absorbed 1640 bags, but here again this trade, which disappeared entirely in 1935-36, was far below the 24,328 bags taken in 1934-35.
