GOVERNMENT HOUSES
RATES TO BE PAID 1 Per Press Association. 1 HASTINGS, Oct. 15. An assurance that the Government would pay rates on dwellings erected under the State housing scheme for the period during which the dwellings were occupied by tenants, irrespective of whether the rent is or is not paid, has been given to the Hastings Courtcil by the Minister of Finance. This intimation is of particular interest to local bodies, for it involves a departure from the present principle involved in the collection of rates from Crown properties, in that at the present time rates are collectable only on the basis of the actual rent paid by the occupants of Crown properties.
