ALLEGED ASSAULT
AFFAIR ON A STEAMER. [ Per Press Association. ] AUCKLAND, Oct. 14. Eye-witnesses o£ the affray on the steamer Port Brisbane on Saturday evening last, when two men were taken to hospital, told the story in the Police Court to-day, when James Gibbens, fireman on the vessel, was charged on two separate counts with assault causing actual bodily harm. Four witnesses were heard to-day as the vessel is sailing for London on Saturday.
William Henry Wrathwell, seaman, said that he heard an argument and saw a man lying on deck with Gibbons standing over him. Witness heard Gibbons tell Charles Hunter, one of the two men assaulted, to get off the ship or “there would be murder in the fo’c’sle that night.” Witness later saw Gibbons with a file in his hand.
Detective-Sergt. McHugh said that Hunter and William McLeod, the other man assaulted, were still in hospital, but would be able to attend at the Court on Monday, to which day the hearing was adjourned.
