SILK HEADS LIST

WANGANUI TOURNAMENT PROVINCIAL TOURNAMENT QUALIFYING ROUNDS Never over fives in tile two qualifying rounds of the Wanganui provincial golf championship, B. M. Silk, amateur champion of New Zealand, headed the large field of 100 players who yesterday participated in the opening day's play at the Belmont links. Silk went round in 75 in the morning, two strokes more than the standard scratch score at Belmont, and he bettered that score by one stroke in the afternoon. His aggregate of 149 was four strokes better than that of the next player, M. Casey, whiner of the Seafield Club’s championship, and L. Cathro, last year’s winner of tile provincial championship, was two strokes further back. The first and second rounds of match play will take place to-day, and the semi-finals are set down for tomorrow morning, with the final of the championship, together with the finals of other competitions, to be played to-morrnw afternoon. The weather was line but overcast, with threats of rain which fortunately did not materialise, for a fairly stiff southerly would have made conditions unpleasant. As it was, the strong wind in the “tiger country” resulted in some players straying off the fairways. The greens proved fairly fast, but a number of players proved unable to gauge the strength for their putts and errors frequently proved expensive. The standard scratch score for Belmont is 73, the ideal card being as follows: Out: 54443454 4—37. In: 3 5 3 4 5 3 5 4 4—36. The number of visiting players was not as large as usual, but the support accorded the tournament by local and district clubs was generous and representative. Among previous winners of the provincial championship who are competing at the tournament are D. C. Collins (1928), J. Goss (1914 and 1924), Gonville Saunders (1917 and 1922), Imlay Saunders (1923), J. Harold (1919, 1920 and 1921), L. Cathro (1929), and F. C. Hutchison (1935). It is rather a remarkable feature that V. B. Haworth (1934 winner) is not competing this year owing to being in Wellington. Those who did not attend the New Zealand championship tournament at St. Andrews and had not seen Silk’s play this season must have been impressed by the improvement he has made in his style since last year. The amateur champion gave a display of effortless golf, a feature of his play being his use of the brassie for all tee shots. Sometimes, when driving against the wind, it appeared as if he might not be able to get the required length, but he did not appear to be troubled and as a result his outward journey in the morning was a string of eight fours broken only by a five at the long sixth. Here is the morning card:— Out: 44444544 4—37. In: 35355445 4—38. His work on and around the greens was splendid, though he was not holing the sensational putts which were the feature of his play in the final of the amateur championship at St. Andrews. His card in the afternoon read as follows: Out: 44343454 5—36. In: 3 5 3 5 5 3 4 5 5—38. Casey’s morning round of 77 included a six at Long Tom, where the wind brought trouble to the Seafield champion, but he would have improved his afternoon round of 76 by at least one stroke if he had not duffed his drive at the sixth. Cathro found the first hole an expensive one in the morning, for he was compelled to card a 7, with the result that he could not do better than 80 for the round. However, he was on his game in the afternoon, when he went out in 39, including a 6 at Redan, the homeward journey being done in two under fours for a total of 75. Included on the card was a perfect 2 at the short twelfth. D. C. Collins, who headed the list of qualifying players last year, was fourth yesterday, his morning round of 79 being one factor, with an expensive 8 at the first hole through bunker trouble. F. C. Hutchison started off with 77 in the morning, but he was one of the last players going out in the afternoon, and before lhe finish the cold wind had affected his putting, with the result that he had to card an 82.

The Kitto brothers finished with aggregates of 160 each, and it was mainly on the greens that they lost strokes. A. R. Kitto’s morning round of 80 included no fewer than three sixes, and there were two more in the afternoon, three-putting on the majority of the greens being responsible for the figures. R. F. Kitto was one stroke better than his brother in the morning but he slipped a couple of strokes in the afternoon. He missed several putts under sft. C. N. Armstrong had an expensive morning round of 86, the first three holes being done in 6,5, 8, the higher figure arising through inability to get out of a bunker and requiring three putts from within a couple of yards of the pin. In spite of a 6 at the first of the afternoon round his card read as follows: — Out: 64353554 4-39. In: 34355564 4—39. J. Goss went round in 80 in the morning, this Including a 7 at the unlucky 13th, but he lost touch in the afternoon and his 85 was barely sufficient to enable him to get into the sixteen to qualify for the championship. The teams match was won by the team consisting of Sewell, Silk, Armstrong and McFarlane, with an aggregate of 301.

Following is the order in which the players qualified for the respective events: —
