PATEA COUNTY COUNCIL Measures for the control of ragwort for the 1937-38 season will be carried out in a manner similar to that of last year and the Patea County Council received advice yesterday that the sum of £450 had been made available in order to enable the council to undertake the work. This was subject to certain conditions which were set out in a letter from the Department of Agriculture. These conditions stated that the council was to organise gangs of men, the maximum total days of such men not to exceed the amount allocated between August 1, 1937, and March 15, 1938. The men were to be from lists supplied by the certifying officer of the Department of Labour for the district, the council to decide which of such men were suitable. The rate of pay was to be 16s per day and married men were to be given preference. Days lost through wet weather or sickness would be without pay. The establishment of a camp up the Waitotara River for ragwort eradication was left to the engineer and Cr. Peat.

Permission was granted Reardon Bros, to erect a lorry shed on Weraweraonga Road, subject to the engineer's approval. Mr. A. J. Kerse’s request for further work on the Kapara Road, was referred to Cr. Peat and the engineer (with power to act), who will also view the Makakaho Road, Mr. N. Waldie having made a request for repairs. The Peacocke Construction Co’s. I tender for Pearce’s bridge, was ac1 cepted. i A deputation consisting of Messrs. A. Pearce (chairman Harbour Board), W. H. Southcombe, A. Dunkley (Seaside Society), and Crs. A. H. Langslow and R. W. Haddow (Borough Council) waited on the council with a request for support in approaching the Government for a report on the erosion at fhe beach. Mr. A. Pearce outlined a similar position, as placed before the Borough Council the previous evening. Mr. Dunkley spoke for <f.e Seaside Society, and Crs. Langslo’w and Haddow were very definite that whilst the borough unanimously supported the project morally they had no power to give financial assistance. The chairman, Cr. Belton, said he

was quite certain the county would give its moral support. Crs. Gibbs and Hurley were appointed to act with the other bodies. The county clerk stated that the county had no statutory authority to spend any money on the suggested protection. Engineer’s Report The county engineer, Mr. Anderson, reported: — •Kapara Riding.—Work has been confined to the Waitotara Valley Highway during the past month. The tractor shovel has been engaged clearing back slips and widening bad points between Mangaone Bridge and the two mile peg. The whole of the output from the crusher has been used for maintenance principally on the lower end of the highway. The Makakaho crusher has put through just over 600 cubic yards for the month and the plant was held up for several days owing to the creek being unfit to work.

“Moumahaki Riding. The offset grader has been working on the upper end of the Moturoa Road and the Fordson grader has been working on Aiken’s Road and McGregor s Road. Improvements have been effected on a narrow section of Block 4 Hill and the Mangawhio Road has been opened to give reasonably good access for stock. Ordinary maintenance has been attended to where necessary. “Waverley Riding.—Work has been confined to ordinary maintenance on all roads. The Fordson grader is working on the Karahaki and Kohi Roads and a number of bad holes on Ngamotu Road have been sanded. “Otoia East Riding. —General maintenance has been attended to where necessary and further formation in preparation for metal is being carried out as time permits. “Otoia West Riding.—Formation for metalling has been carried out on Upper Manutahi, Otoia Gorge and Wilford Roads and some shingle surfacing has been done on McKenna’s Lane, Whitehead’s Road and the Kakaramea Station Road. General maintenance has been attended to as required. “Main Road—Bitumen patching is being done over the whole length of the main road.

“Manutahi Crusher.—The crushing plant has been completely overhauled and the contractor is making good progress with carting boulders. It is proposed to drive this crushing plant with the old steam roller and arrangements have been made for an inspection for the necessary boiler certificate so that work can be started as soon as the Government authorities are to hand. “Plant.—Most of the county plant has been completely overhauled and reconditioned and is in good order for the season’s work.” Those present were Crs. W. G. Belton (chairman), W. H. Watkins, C. Campbell, W. Back, J. Peat, D. Hurley, A. J. Gibbs, R. J. Watt, J. Lupton and Messrs. G. J. Broker (county clerk), and J. N. Anderson (county engineer).
