i’LVNKET SOCIETY The monthly meeting was held at the Flunkct Rooms on Monday afternoon. The following were present: Mesdames V/. J. Benham (chair), IL Sigley, K. Baird, N. Brown, A. Gurwin. 11. V. Marshall, G. Anderson, C. M. Whyte, 11. lx. McDonald (secretary). An apology for absence was received from Mrs. Yv’. H. Sandford. Accounts amounting to £24 Is were passed for payment. All present observed a brief silence as a mark of respect for the memoi, of the late Mrs. P. G. Cmithformer prominent member of th. society. The following report for the month of September was presented by the relieving nurse (Nurse I. Dobson); New babies, G—3 are breast fed. 2 breast fed with compliment, one artificially fed. Home visits: liaetihi, old cases 18, new cases 1. Makaranui and Pakahi: Old eases 4, new cases 3. To rooms: Adult 71, babies 67, children 6. Babies on books 52, older children 22. One new babe is suffering from malnutrition and one babe has had bronchitis. The general health of the other mothers and babies is satisfactory. The report was adopted. It was agreed to hold the next meeting of the committee on the first Monday in February. 1938. BULB SHOW COMMITTEE A meeting of the above committee was held at P.aetihi on Monday afternoon, Mrs. K. Baird presiding and the following were also in attendance. Mesdames W. J. Feltham (secretary), R. Sigley, N. Brown, G. Anderson, A. G. Urwin, O. D. Bell, H. V. Marshall, C. M. Whyte and H. K. McDonald. The balance sheet for the show showing a credit of £4l 3s lid. was adopted. Mrs. Feltham expressed her thanks to members of the committee for the assistance they had rendered to make the show the success it was. __ The joint secretaries (Mesdames Feltham and Marshall) were also thanked for their work in connection with the recent show. The secretary was asked to write a letter of thanks to all those who had in any way rendered assistance to the bulb show committee on the day of the show. Several suggestions for the general improvement of the show were discussed and adopted. TRIPLE ’IST. BIRTHDAY PARTY Miss Ruby Wise, Mr. Jack Foster and Mr. Raymond Hoddle were the guests of honour at the Druid’s Hall on Saturday evening, when upwards of 130 people gathered to congratulate them on attaining their majority. The function took the form' of a social and dance, the duties of M.C. being characteristically carried out bv Mr. Joe Haley. Games occupied the lirst part of the evening, musical chairs proving to be the most popular and amusing pastime. The winner of the ladies section was Miss Willoughby, and Mr. Roger West was the winner of the men's. A competition for a surprise parcel was won by Mr. B. A. Drury. Following supper the respective cakes were cut by Miss Wise and the congratulations of all present were expressed by Mr. Drury, who presented each guest with the traditional key. Nir. Wise, senr.Jn reply, thanked those present for the good wishes. After the enthusiastic singing of musical honours danc’ng was indulged in, the dance music oeing supplied by the Misses Rickards and Guilder and Mr. T. Ranginui.

( HESS CLUB The Raetihi Chess Club is improving weekly in membership and keen interest is being displayed at the Thursday night tourneys. Quite a number of novices are taking the game in their stride and causing the older hands to look thoughtfully to their laurels. Last Thursday was a challenge night for the ladder competition, and the results were as follows:—R. Sigley defeated D. Salter by 2 to 1; D. Scarrow defeated A. C. Bearsley by 2 lo 1; J. McDonald defeated Mrs. Bearsley by 2 games. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE The monthly meeting of Ihe above institute was held in the Druid’s Hall on Thursday. Mrs. Dobson (vicepresident), in the absence of the president (Mrs. Frederick) presided over a fair attendance of members. New members and visitors were warmly welcomed. The meeting opened with the “Ode’’ followed by the Aspirations. Mrs. Dobson read the motto for the month, “An acre of performance is worth a whole world of promise.’’ General business was dealt with an delegates were elected to attend the half yearly council meeting to be held at Mangaweka.
