Miss A. M. Blackett, librarian at the Wanganui Public Library, was the speaker at yesterday’s luncheon of the Wanganui Rotary Club.

Mr. F. C. Mackie was elected as a member of the executive of the Wanganui Chamber of Commerce at last night’s monthly meeting, to fill an extraordinary vacancy.

Mr. K. Mitchell, of Wellington, was welcomed as a visitor by the president, Rotarian A. McSkimming, at yesterday’s luncheon of the Wanganui Rotary Club.

The appointment of Mr. W. Harris, former inspector for the Whangamomona Rabbit Board, as inspector for the Patea-Waitotara, Wanganui, and Wangaehu Rabbit Boards is gazetted. The appointment of his successor at Whangamomona, Mr. R. de B. Hill, is also gazetted.

Mr. O. Haddon, of the National Broadcasting Service, Wellington, journeyed to the Chateau yesterday en route for Pipiriki, where he will gather material for broadcast talks on the history of the Wanganui River. The first of these talks will be given on Saturday evening next.

At a well-attended meeting of the congregation of the Fordell Presbyterian Church yesterday, Rev. A. H. Norrie, interim moderator presiding, it was unanimously decided to send a call to Rev. G. W. T. Hercus, of Kaiapoi, clerk of the Christchurch Presbytery. Several weeks ago a call was forwarded to Rev. G. Macrae, of Lincoln, Christchurch, but he was unable to accept it.

The appointment of Mr H. Headland, assistant electrical engineer at Arapuni, to the position of office engineer in the aeronautical inspection branch of the Air Department was announced yesterday by the Minister in charge of the Department, Hon. F. Jones. Mr Headland is a Master of Science of the New Zealand University, Fellow of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers and an Associate Member of the Institute of Civil Engineers. He was from March, 1933, to April, 1935, with Metropolitan Vickers electrical company and from April, 1935, to April, 1936, with Boving and Company, hydraulic engineers. He has had extensive experience in physical testing of all kinds of engineering materials, with specialised knowledge of welding, including fatigue tests. In addition, he has a sound knowledge of engineering chemistry, qualitative analysis and ferrous and non-ferrous alloys.
