MAKIRIKIRI TENNIS CLUB
The annual general meeting of the above club was held in the Upokongaro Hall last week, Mr. Friedricks presiding. There was a good attendance which augurs well for the prospects of the coming season. The following officers were elected: Patron, Mr. J. Farley; president, Mr. F. Friedricks; vice-presidents, Mr. P. Wilmeshurst, Mr. L. James, Mr. W. Ford, Air. J. Todd; secretary and treasurer, Air. H. J. Clemance; auditor, Mr. W. P. Newsham; committee, Mrs. Hammond, Mrs. A. Walker, Mrs. Clemance and Messrs. C. Horrocks, W. Howard, P. Grant, D. Goldsbury and A. Walker; grounds committee, S. Leydon and H. Clemance; club captain, H. J. Clemance.
It was decided to purchase a new lawn-mower and centre-tapes for the nets.
Air. A. Walker’s offer to donate a net to the club was received with acclamation.
It was decided to hold the opening day on Saturday, October 22, play to commence at 10.30 a.m., weather conditions permitting, members to bring cups and food, tea to be provided. A working bee was arranged for Saturday, October 15. Members who take part in the Golf Club’s closing day matches will be welcomed at the courts on Saturday morning or after golf in the afternoon.
The balance-sheet showed a credit of £8 17s Bd, which was largely due to the generosity of the club’s patron, president and vice-presidents.
Votes of thanks were passed to Air. Newsham for auditing the books, to Mr. Spicer for carrying timber gratis for the club, Mr. E. Farley for making tennis ladders, and to Messrs. Friedricks and Clemance for their work in connection with the inauguration of the club.
