TAIHAPE DEFEATED

WIN FOR RANGITIKEI MATCH AT WINTERVILLE (Own Correspondent) MARTON, Aug. 7. In Jhe senior Ruby representative match, played at the Hunterville Domain to-day, Rangitikei defeated Taihape by 22 points to 6. The game was played in a sea of mud and towards the final stages it was very difficult to define the players. The game, from the spectators’ point of view, was a good one considering the state of the ground, play being mostly confined to the forwards, with occasional good back movements. In the Rangitikei team, Davies, McDonald and Larsen played well, while Blair did good work in the open. In the back line. Bending played a good game at half-back, and fed his backs well. Lawrence, in the fiveeighths position, played soundly, while Culpan lived up to his reputation although he did not see much of the ball. H. Taiuru, at full-back, was safe and ably assisted with his boot. Williams, at second five-eighths, made many fine runs, but was too greedy and starved his three-quarters. For Taihape, W. Thompson led the forwards in a number of fine rushes. In the backs, R. Johnson was safe and ran strongly. J. Marshall was also sound on defence, but saw very little of the ball. Rangitikei was without the services of their leading forward James, who was supposed to have captained the team, McDonald taking his place as leader, and J. Powell filling the vacancy in the team. Rangitikei Opens Scoring Rangitikei kicked off and defended the northern goal. After play had been in progress twenty minutes, Rangitikei were awarded a penalty for the Taihape forwards handling in the scrum. Taiuru made no mistake with the kick.—Rangitikei 3; Taihape 0. The next score came to Rangitikei when Campbell kicked to the fullback, who fumbled and allowed the Rangitikei forwards to carry on with a rush, which resulted in Powell scoring. Taiuru missed the kick.—Rangitikei 6; Taihape 0. A short time after, Rangitikei again scored when Blair crossed the fine from a forward scramble. Taiuru converted with a good kick.—Rangitikei 11; Taihape 0. Soon after this Lawrence dummied his way past the opposition and handed on to Davies, who crossed the line. Taiuru again converted with a great kick.—Rangitikei 16; Taihape 0. Half-time sounded soon after. Taihape opened the scoring in the , second half when, after a good forward rush, Sisson scored. A. Hagan’s kick was unsuccessful. —Rangitikei 16; Taihape 3. Five minutes after Taihape had scored Larsen broke away from the line-out and handed on to Davies, who scored. Taiuru missed the kick.— Rangitikei 19; Taihape 3.

Taihape then pressed hard and off* side play by a Rangitikei forward gave Hagan an easy penalty kick.— Rangitikei 19; Taihape 6. Just before time sounded a scrum took place near Taihape’s line and. after a tussle, Bending managed to dive across the line.
