DRAW AT HUNTERVILLE

WANGANUI TEAM HELD IN MUD Technical Old Boys were unable to get their backs functioning to any purpose against Hunterville. Heavy going robbed them of all the speed they would have shown had they played on Spriggens Park. Hunterville, on the other hand, put plenty of vim into their play and swept over the opposing line. McDonald, the hooker, was playing wing three-quar-ter for Hunterville and the side thus lost possession from a majority of the set scrums. That actually turned out to be an advantage, in that the Technical Old Boys’ backs found the greasy ball hard to handle and the going too stiff for them. Technical Old Boys, although the game was very even throughout, held a territorial advantage and looked like winners until shortly before time, when a converted try near the posts brought Hunterville to a draw. The Hunterville team was disorganised with a junior playing full-back. (Gordon). He played exceptionally well. In the junior ranks he is a side-row man. Barnes, a poor back, was also a poor substitute in the forwards and J. Taiuru, staging a comeback, was a passenger, being very unlit. Kjoss, Davidson and Goldsbury went well, with Welsh and Rowe outstanding in backs. Rowe saved often by going down well, which the other backs failed to do. For Hunterville, Dallas led the pack with Walker, L. Rowe, going well. Bartlett worked hard. Gordon, at full, was safe and Taka-

angi played a solid and energetic game in the live-eighths line. S. Hartley, at half, went well and his run to get a try was a gem. H. Taiuru was hanging on and starved Orgias, Hunterville’s star centre, who made the most of his few chances. The ground was muddy and sticky, but many bright moves were seen and the play was fast to both departments from start to finish. Technical Old Boys’ first try came after a nice run by Valentine, who was well tackled by Gordon. The ball rolled clear and Shewan was awarded a try after the referee nad consulted a touch judge. Welsh missed with the kick—Technical Old Boys 3, Hunterville 0. Technical Old Boys caught the Hunterville side badly out of position an! Welsh went over flying for a try. The try was scored under the crossbar ana the scorer converted it—Technical Old Boys 8, Hunterville 0. S. Hartley worked the blind side of the scrum and put in a nice run before transferring to Taiuru, who was tackled. The ball rolled clear and McDonald, the hooker who was playing wing, scored. The kick failed and the score at half-time was, Technical Old Boys 8, Hunterville .3. Attack and counter-attack followed in the second spell. Hunterville, towards the last, woke up and a loose rush in Technical Old Boys' twentyfive ended in Takarangi going over for a try near the posts. S. Hartley, with a sate kick, converted and made the scores eight all. Things became very hot and excited from that out and Hunterville had the visitors penned in the twenty-five when the game was called a tie. Mr. Baker was the referee. M
