GERMANY’S SAD HOURS
‘ the POPE'S SYMPATHY ADDRESS TO PILGRIMS ROME, June 9. “The hours through which Catholic Germany is passing are so grave, menacing, and said that they make us weep,” the Pope told German pilgrims from Augsburg, Bavaria. He aded: “We have always done our best to alleviate this immense suffering and will continue to do so, no matter what is said about us.” SECRET TRIAL GERMAN SENTENCES LABOUR PAPER’S COMMENT LONDON, June 9. The secret trial before the dreaded special tribunal in Berlin resulted in two former trade union leaders being sentenced to death, a th’ird to life imprisonment, a fourth to 15 years, and a woman organiser to 12 years, all for high treason. The Daily Herald, stating that the news has leaked out from Germany, declares that beatings, an interminable third degree, and the refusal of doctors when ill, were part of the illtreatment meted out to the prisoners since 1935, but they had failed to break their spirit, for all, when before the judges, boldly proclaimed their left-wing convictions. The Daily Herald adds that whatever faked evidence was produced, Max Maddalena, a former deputy, who was sentenced to life imprisonment, could not possibly be guilty of treason, because he and his wife left Germany months before Herr Hitler was seizing power. Then in Marc*, 1935, he decided to travel through Germany to see the conditions. He was arrested within 24 hours. The names of those sentenced to death are: Robert Stamm, forms? deputy, and Adolf Rembeke, former trade union journalist. GERMAN GAS MASK LAST WORD IN EFFICIENCY SIMPLE CONSTRUCTION BERLIN, June 9. The people’s gas-mask is claimed to be the last word in anti-gas devices. It is of simple construction, differing from the wartime model in that it has no box attachment or flexable breathing tube. A small one-way filter fits directly over the mouthpiece. Spectacles may be worn under the mask. Those with beards are notified that they need not trim their whiskers less than the length of a long hand. The mask will be supplied in three sizes, for men, women, and children. The fabric is synthetic rubber. The mash can be adjusted in one movement of the hand. The recipients will be invited to enter a gas chamber and convince themselves of its efficacy.
