American Merchant Marine A SUBSIDISED FLEET (By < Teicgraph—Press Association —Uapy right) Received June 9, 9.30 p.m. WASHINGTON, June 8. In a special message to Congress Mr. Roosevelt urged the construction of a Governmentsubsidised American merchant marine to replace obsolete vessels now flying the American flag. He asked for a nimniediate appropriation of 10,000,000 dollars and th© authorisation of an addition 150,000,000 dollars as the start of a five-year replacement programme aggregating 450,000,000 dollars. The funds would be available to the recently-created United States Maritime Commission, the chairman of which said it would enable the building of 95 ships.
