STEEPLES TO WYKEMIST JOVIALITY SURPRISES 1 P«r Treat Association. 1 NAPIER, June 9. The weather was fine but cold for the first day of the Napier Park Racing Club’s winter meeting. The attendance was good and the course in excellent order. Four prime favourites secured first places. In the last race Joviality, one much neglected, rewarded its admirers, returning a divident of over a score. The totalisator handled £6728, compared with £4773 10s last year, an increase of £1954 10s. In the opening event Eric Coyle was thrown and suffered Injuries to his back, the extent of which has not yet been decided. He is now an inmate of a public hospital. Time 1.3, BIRTHDAY HACK HANDICAP (Of £l4l ; one mile.) 1— TRAILER, 8.8, R. Marsh 1 —LUCULLUS LAD, 9.9, Forsyth 2 3 GIRONDE, 8.9, Stratton 3 Also: 4 Tractile, 6 Buster Brown, 2 Royal Flash, 8 Seyfried, 7 Hunting Tartan. Neck; length and a-half. Time, 1.40. NAPIER STEEPLECHASE (Of £150; about 2| miles.) 3—WYKEMIST, 9.6, C. Carroll 1 2 GIVEN, 9.11, Rohloff 2 1— DOZIE, 10.11, Grindlay 3 Also: 5 Royal Bengal, 6 Monarchy, 7 Count Willonyx. The winner was prominent and lead to nearing the straight, when Dozie and Given took turns. Wykemist and Given cleared the last hurdle on terms, the latter winning by a good half-length. Dozie was five lengths back and Count Willonyx fourth. Time 5.8 3-5.
