ON WANGANUI TRACKS

INTERESTING WORK YESTERDAY’S GALLOPS Several useful sprints were indulged in yesieruay morning by hordes claiming engagements to-day at the Wanganui jockey Club’s meeting, and in some instances tney tenued io throw little light on the prooiem pre- ! sented in the Bristol iiuck Cup mis I afternoon. The weather was ideal and the tracks, though a tritie suit, nevertneless proviaea good going. Two Hack Cup canuidaUo m Dictate and Brazen King spurted over three furlongs and registered Jisec., which time was equaneu by Airing, alone, a little later. All tnree went well and in the case of lhe firstmentioned pair it was obvious that improvement on tneir lirst-day displays could be expected provided tne weather is fine. International shaded Red Manfred at the end of six furlongs, which took a tick over imin. ibsec. The Captain Buiisuy gelamg should be well suited by tne conditions 10-ciay. Another gallop over six mriongs was that whicn went down to tne credit of Davistock and Master Nerval, who took Imin. IJsec., with Mugler iNorval in front. Sporting bong slipped over four furiungs in 53sec., atier having done a circuit at hail-pace. Mandamus finished a couple of lengths in front of Tiger Gain at the end of five furlongs, which took them a shade over Imin. 4sec. Helios took 40sec. for the last three furlongs of a half-mile. Clarion Call, Hunting Queen and Taro were companions in a spin over six furlongs, with the last-named finishing better than the other pair to register Imin. 20sec. On this display the Cockpit gelding should have an excellent chance in the Bristol Hack Cup. Dawning Light appeared to give of her best in running four furlongs in 50 3-ssec. Hunting Lodge took 37 l-ssec. to run three furlongs, going easily all the way. Cloudy Bay took a tick over 50sec. to run four furlongs. Corowa went a circuit at a solid pace, taking 52scc. for the final four furlongs. Parakino hit out well in a circuit, sprinting thc final quarter. Flying Chief had the outside running in a bout over six furlongs with Le Grand, being clocked over the final live in Imin. 4 l-ssec. Pukeko had the better of Lady Siegfried in a spin over six furlongs, taking Imin. 18sec. Battleground, who came to grief at the first of the brush double on Saturday, again blundered when sent over the four obstacles in the straight yesterday morning. This time it was at the second obstacle that he stumbled, but he was taken back and shaped better.

VISIT TO GRANGE STUD , NEW WESTMERE VENTURE I ; PHALERON BAY ADJURED i Taking advantage of the opportunity provided by the break of three or four days between the two days of the Wanganui Jockey Club's winter meeting, a large number' of visiting racing enthusiasts inspected various ; breeding establishments in lhe vicin- • ity of Wanganui. The well-known ; Sydney trainer George Price was l among a party which went out to Mr. M. Grogan’s newly-established Grange ’ Stud, at Westmere, and afterwards 1 journeyed out to Mr. G. M. Currie's famous Koatanui Stud. A feature of ' the district which was remarked on by . the visitors was the plendid growth of the pasturePhaleron Bay was admired at the Grange z Stud, and the indications are that the Pharalis horse will prove a ■ valuable acquisition to the thorough- ■ bred breeding industry of the Do- ■ minion, especially when breeders come to appreciate his lines. Well-manner-ed, though full of life, Phaleron Bay presented a striking picture when paraded lor inspection. As the Grange establishment is being run as an agistment farm as much as anything else, interest was displayed in the condition of The Bigot, The Buzzer and Chief Ranger, which have been enjoying a respite from racing. They have materially benefited through their let-up and the attention they have received. Two rising two-year-olds which were sent over by the Sydney trainer J. T. Jamieson took thc eye, partly because of their breeding and partly because of their taking appearance. One is a brown colt by Windbag from Recuperator, a Verbius mare out of a sister to thc well-performed Son o' Mine. The other is a brown colt by Pantheon from Mimic (Windbag— Queen Ingoda). The latter colt is thus by the sire of a Melbourne Cup ■ winner (Peter Pan), out of a- mare . which was sired by a Melbourne Cup winner (Windbag) from the sister of a Melbourne Cup winner (King Ingoda). Foals which are being cared for al the Grange Stud include the following:—Brown illly by Bulandshar from Sea Scout by Night Raid; brown colt by Beau Pere from Silver Rule (Chief Ruler—Silver Link); brown filly by Beau Pere from Mandane (by Panmure); colt by Beau Pere from Joybird (imp.); colt by Siegfried from All Bright; brown colt by Beau Pere from Passbook; filly by Beau Pere from Zarene (by Chief Ruler); brown filly by Beau Pet>> from Barbacan (Top Gallant—Columbia); Ally by Beau Pere from Curtsey (Limond— Salute); chestnut coll by Lord Warden from Maypay. The last-named filly is owned by Captain Crawford, a director of the British Bloodstock Agency. RACING FIXTURES June 5, 9.—Wanganui J.C. June 5. 9, 12.—Auckland R.C. June 9. 10. 12.—Dunedin J.C.
