NAPIER PARK CLUB

i KING’S BIRTHDAY MEETING PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY Clashing as it does with the Auckland and Wanganui meetings, the winter fixture of the Napier Park Racing Club to-day and Saturday suffers so far as fields are concerneu, the lack in quality, however, being balanced to a certain extent by the numbers engaged. The hurdle and steeplechase events are hack affairs, and the only open race is the Flying Handicap, run over six furlongs. The totalisator will be operated on the single-pool system. The weather during the week-en<i is reported to have been better than elsewhere in the North Island. The following should be well supported in their respective engagements to-day: Moteo Hack Hurdles. Bothwell, Cotsfield, Marching Song. Maiden Scurry. Paul Robeson, Anubis, Royal Romance. Birthday Hack Handicap.—Buster Brown, Royal Feast, Lucullus Lad. Napier Steeplechase.—Dozie, Monarchy, Count Willonyx. Ladies’ Handicap.—King's Lancer, Tres Sec. Flying Handicap.—Hunter's Morn, Passion Flower, Lavina. Meanee Hack Handicap.—Fossicker, Gironde, Golden Time. Following is the list of acceptors:— 11.30 -

MANAWATU RACING CLUB THE WINTER MEETING NOMINATIONS TO-MORROW The Manawatu Racing Club's oneday winter meeting will be held at Awapuni on Saturday, July 3, and nomations for the eight-race programme are due to close at 9 p.m. next Friday. The programme is a well-balanced one with two open flat events, the Palmerston North Handicap, which carried a stake of £250 and will be decided over a mile and a-quarter, and Mcßae Handicap (1200>, over seven furlongs. The Awapuni Steeplechase (£250) will be contested over about two and three-quarter miles, and the Flaxbourne Hurdles over Is miles. In addition there are hack events over 11 miles and six furlongs, a steeplechase for qiyilified hunters, and the Ladies’ Bracelet for gentlemen riders. Weights arc due to appear on June 23 and acceptances close on June 28. present no difficulties. J’he big fences are second nature to Valpeen, and he ought, to finish in front of Huskie. There are several steeplechase prospects that were not on show on Saturday, notable among these being Billy Boy, Don Erma, Allegretto, Forest Glow, Black Marlin, and Monastic, the last-named pair being under a cloud. Black Marfin would have been the totalisator favourite, fit and well, but the recent interruption in his preparation would not have been of any help to him. Monastic is a rare stayer. One who is 1 still greatly admired is Allegretto, whose owner is delighted with the manner in which he had blood up to his tasks since winning at Te Rapa a fortnight ago. Plenty of I schooling and long work has improved j his condition consideraoly, and one is > prepared now to place him first in ! summing up the big event for Wed-! nesday. A hard horse to keep going, j he looks ready to run a great race in i the Great Northern Steeplechase. i Billy Boy is %ery well, and will not I lack condition. Don Erma, for season- > ing, holds the prize. Forest Glow will ; require to improve to rehabilitate I himself, but he may be capable of i doing so. However, as the position remains j now, Allegretto is the horse that is ’ selected for Wednesday. He has been 1 over the country twice, and success-. fully, and the hard work he has got; through in the past fortnight should i remove the suspicion as to lack of racing condition.
