PETONE CLUB ANNUAL SMOKE CONCERT. OUTSTANDING SUCCESS. The very large number ot roWMS and supporters present, and the magnificent array ot prizes for presentation, made the Peione Rowing Club's annual reunion and smoke concert, held on Saturday evening, an outstanding success. The president of the club. Mr. A Anderson, presided, and complimented the club on its fine performances last season. In toasting "The Club,” he referred to the fact that since he had joined the club 37 years ago the membership had grown tremendously, m had the equipment. Mr. A. E. Jones replied on behalf At the club and eulogised the work of *w committee and executive. Eight or nine years ago, he said, when the new rowing sheds were first occupied, the club was in debt to the amount ol approximately £lOOO, but owing to the fine work of members and the committee the club now had a little over £lOO to its credit. The club was going to purchase an eight-oar boat out of this, and this extra equipment, plus its traditions and reputation, would make the Petone Rowing Club second to none in New Zealand. Financially, socially, and as regards the records of wins in regattas, the club had had an outstanding season. The most noteworthy feature ot the past season had been the winning of the New Zealand champion fours. “The Prizewinners" were toasted by Mr. R. G. Duncan, who, in speciallv congratulating the New Zealand champion fours crew, made eulogistic erference to the coach, Mr. Albert White. Mr. G. Leopard replied. Before presenting the prizes, the Mayor of Petone (Mr. A. Schofield) remarked on the fact that had the loan proposals been carried Petone would have benefited immensely. He said that the council had been let down by the various sports bodies. He made brief mention of the forthcoming Empire Games and the Petone crew which will represent New Zealand there. A photograph of the winning crew was presented to the coach, Mr. A. While, by O. N. Clayton, stroke of the crew, on behalf of the club, a photograph of D. Boswell and P. Abbott, first winners of the Black and White trophy, was presented by the club to Mr. R. Aldridge, representing Captain Prictor. "Controlling Bodies" were toasted by Mr. A. E. White, and Mr. J. Thodey replied. "Kindred Clubs,” proposed by Mr. J. Howe and replied to by Mr. Luke (W.R.C.). and “Old Members." proposed by Mr. L. Boyd, and replied ,to by Mr. R. G.
