DEARER BOOTS AND SHOES
EFFECT ON HIDE MARKET Retail boot and shoe stores in the United States of America have advanced their prices from 5 to 15 per cent., and now that these higher ligures are established it will make it easier to keep the leather and hides market from falling away to any extent, states a report from W. Weddel and Company, Limited. There is also a marking up in retail prices of boots and shoes in England, so that the tendency is clearly toward better times. It would appear that the hide market may be about at bottom. In any case, it would not take very active trading to bring a good many buyers on the scene. The tanners in England, for example, are certainly interested in sound frigorilico ox hides at 9d or thereabouts. Also. Russia is taking very special notice of the frigorifico market and is only waiting to see a steadier situation. The budgets in England and the United States of America are now known and it is not thought that the new taxation will affect the confidence of the trade.
