ROWING

WANGANUI CLUB TROPHIES PRESENTED. MEMBERS’ ANNUAL DINNER. Trophies and cups won during the past rowing season were presented to members of the Wanganui Rowing Club at a dinner in the Federal Hotel on Saturday evening. The president, Mr. P. Evans, presided and among those present were Messrs. J. B. Cotterill, M.P. for Wanganui, D. E. Dustin (president of the Union Boat Club) C. A. Healey (Union Boat Club), P. Stowers (Aramoho Boating Club) and F. Jones (Aramoho Boating Club). The toasts of the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association and the Wanganui Rowing Association was proposed by Mr. L. Clapham, secretary of the club. In replying to the toast, Mr. D. E. Dustin said that rowing was one of the sports, in which the controlling associations were acomplishing good work. It was remarkable what the N.Z. Rowing Association and the Wanganui Rowing Association could do in keeping rowing alive and progressive. For its population, rowing in New Zealand was of a higher standard than in countries with a population of five millions and more. This fact had been borne out on those occasions when New Zealand crews had competed overseas. It was an object lesson, said Mr. Dustin, to see the admirable way in which the sports of rowing and the comradeship of the clubs were maintained by the associations. These associations set an example which other associations could follow. As an old rower, he had no hesitation in saying that he had never seen a more friendly spirit between the clubs in Wanganui. The toast of kindred clubs was proposed by Mr. S. Cass (club captain), who said that it was the opposition from other clubs that helped a club along. He congratulated the Union Boat Club on its meritorious win in the eight-oar race at Akaroa and the Wanganui rowers who had been selected to represent New Zealand in the eights at the British Empire Games. Mr. P. Stowers (Aramoho) and Mr. C. Healey (Union) replied). Mr. Healey said that now that the three clubs were holding sprint fours he could see no reason why inter-club races could not be held each Saturday. Such competitions would secure a better union and a greater spirit of friendship between the clubs. He congratulated the Wanganui Club on fs success in regattas which was commendable in view of the loss of so many valuable oarsmen.

The toast of "Old Members'* was proposed by Mr. P. Evans and replied to by Mr. H. Delves, a life member of the club. The toast of “The President,” was proposed by Mr. J. B. Cotterlll. M.P., who said that the club was fortunate in having a man of Mr. Evans’ calibre at its head. He had the interests of rowers at heart. In replying, Mr. Evans said that his interest in rowing was keen and that he liked to help the young man along. In his work for the club, he had received the cooperation of several of its experienced members. The toast of "The host and hostess” proposed by Mr. A. Graham brought the evening to a close. The following trophies won during the past season were presented by Mr. Evans: Novice Pairs.- Mr. P. Evans’ Trophy: M. Breed (str.), R. Ross (bow), J. Cleary (cox), G. Tuffin (cox). Club Fours.—N.
