ON WANGANUI TRACKS

FINAL PREPARATIONS YESTERDAY’S OPERATIONS Fine weather over the week-end assisted to improve the Wanganui tracks yesterday, and the strong w’ind which blew all night also appeared to effect considerable improvement. A shower early in the morning caused number one grass tracx to become a trifle soft, but two or three fresh horses for to-morrow’s races put up very satisfactory times. Mandamus and High Test covered a mile together in Imin. 47sec., being clocked to take imin. 20sec. tor the last six furlongs. At the finish High Test was in the lead, being two lengths clear. Another newcomer is Colleen Gain, who is engaged in the Farewell Hack Handicap, and who was sent once round, finishing up over the final four iurlongs in a tick under 52sec. Sir Nigel was not required to make time, but was sent round twice at a strong pace and appeared to be anxious to do better. The majority of the horses which were seen in action on the opening day of the races got through serviceable work. The Century Hurdles winner, Clarion Call, was given a reminder of his Wanganui Steeplechase task by being sent over the four big lences in the straight, these comprising the brush al the bottom of the straight, the double brush in front of the stands, and the brush near the seven-furlongs. He jumped with the confidence which characterised his work prior to last bacuraay s successful effort over the battens, and in spite of the fact that he has been assessed 111 b better than Royal Banquet, Clarion Call must have an excellent chance in the cross-country event to-morrow.

Clarion Call was ridcien by A. Jenkins, who will have the mount m the Wanganui Steeplechase, and will also be on Hunting Queen and Rotoma to-morrow. Jenkins had a great day on Saturday, when he was narrowly beaten on Hunting Queen and then went on to steer Clarion Call, Royal Banquet and Rotoma to victory. The only other piece of schooling yesterday morning was a display over the four obstacles in the straight byCroydon, ridden by T. Tito. The only mistake he made was at the first of the double brush.
