EMPIRE FLEET
DEFENCE IN THE EAST REPORTED PROGRAMME LONDON, May 20. Plans for a £70,000.000 Empire Fleet to be stationed in the East will be discussed at the Imperial Conference, says the Daily Express. Such a fleet, it is suggested, would be charged with the duty of protecting trade routes from the coast of Africa to ports in the Pacific. Its strength would be similar to that of the Mediterranean Fleet. .’ The fleet would comprise, probably, a battle-squadron of five capital ships, two cruiser squadrons, three destroyer flotillas, and attendant craft. There would be approximately 100 ships in all. It has been suggested that such a fleet might be formed by linking the Dominion fleets and basing them on Singapore . Maintenance costs would be about £12,000,000 a year. Britain, it is said, is prepared to bear 64 per cent, of the building and maintenance costs, the Dominions tn chare the rest.
