MATCH DRAWN

H.Z. AND NORTHANTS LEG-BREAK BOWLER MISSED SOLID BATTING (By the Special Representative of the United Press Association.) NORTHAMPTON, June 4. The cricket match between New Zealand and Northamptonshire resulted in a draw. New Zealand’s second innings was declared closed at 280 for four wickets, Carson being out for 86, leaving Northamptonshire 430 runs to get to win. The county team batted till stumps, when the score was 308 for four wickets. The weather was line but uncertain when the match was resumed this morning and the wicket was in good order. New Zealand had a difficult task in the field, the perfect wicket helping the county to play out time and avoid an outright defeat. Page (17) and Carson (52) continued their overflight partnership till the latter was caught at mid-off. The pair added 110 for the fourth wicket in 80 minutes. The left-hander Carson’s display lasted two hours and ins| eluded eight 4’s with some very strong leg hits. The innings was immediately declared closed, leaving the county over five hours to bat. Attack Lacks Sting.

New Zealand employed eight bowlers, who were unavailing in their efforts to dislodge the batsmen, who all played well on a hard and true wicket. The attack lacked wickettaking venom and the absence of a slow leg-break bowler was also severely felt. Roberts, Dunning, and Gallichan were comparatively inexpensive but the batsmen seldom appeared to be troubled. Nelson, a Cambridge Blue who is qualifying for the county, played a dour innings. Brookes, a 21-year-old professional, gave the best display of his career for a century. Timms, perhaps the county’s best batsman, was al’so very sound. It was disappointing that the tourists were unable to force a win but the conditions were certainly made to order for the batsmen.
