The Auckland Racing Club's Great Northern Steeplechase meeting was opened to-day at Ellerslie in cold, squally weather before an attendance of 18,500. The track was very heavy. Length; two and a-half lengths. Time, 5.1. Modern Maid and Killadar led out. Tout de Monde, Lap Up and Roxy fell at the first fence. After three furlongs Modern Maid was ten lengths out from Valpeen, Huskie, Sandy Dix and Jolly Beggar. Killadar fell near the seven furlongs. Past the stands the first time Sandy Dix and Huskie made play from Modern Maid, Lord Vai, Erination and Jolly Beggar. Round the back Huskie and Erination lost ground. Half a mile from home Sandy Dix was just ahead of Jolly Beggar, Huskie, Erination and Lord Vai. Into the straight Sandy Dix, Jolly Beggar, Lord Vai and Huskie ran almost abreast, Sandy Dix leading over the last fence to win by a length from Huskie, with Jolly Beggar another two and a-half lengths away. Along the back Royal Dance had charge from Te Hai, Grand City, Valmint and De Friend. Running no better than twelfth to the half-mile Boomerang then made a fast forward move and was sixth into the straight, where Royal Dance and Te Hai were setting the pace together in front of De Friend and Valmint. At the distance De Friend led from Valmint, Boomerang and King Rey, who were challenging strongly. In the final dash Boomerang came through to win by half a head from Valmint, who beat De Friend by a head. King Rey was a close fourth, followed by Enge, Te Hai, Knight of Australia and Royal Dance.
