Apprentices’ Duel.

Friesland and Pukeko were preferred to Taitoru in the Empire Handicap, in which the apprentices on Taitoru and International staged a fine duel to take the dividends in the order named. When the field had settled down, Taitoru was showing the way followed by Le Grand, Friesland, Tiger Gain, Pukeko and Gay Boy. There was not much change to the half-mile where the leaders were we’d bunched. Crossing the top International and Pukeko made forward moves and they were on terms with Taitoru as they swung into the straight. Friesland was just in behind them and Tiger Gain and Gay Boy were next. Taitoru and International then drew out, and in an exciting finish the former scored by a long head. Pukeko was third, three and a-half lengths back, and Friesland was fourth. Next were Le Grand and Master Norval. The Last to Rotoma Backers went Lor Flying Chief, Dictate, Taro and Airing in the concluding event, but Rotoma upset calculations. Airing moved out smartly with Te Huia, Vvinsome Lu, Race Call, Dictate and Dawning Light in close attendance, but after a furlong Te Huia had run to the front, followed by Race Call. Airing, Vvinsome Lu, Ngalirahiri. Dictate, Malibu and Taro. The positions of the leaders were unchanged crossing the top, but RoLoma was moving up fast on the outside. Te Huia, Race Call and Airing led into the staright, but Rotoma, wide out, set out after Airing from the distance and caught him fifty yards from home, going on to win by a short length. Two lengths back was Winsome Lu, with Te Huia, Dictate, Flying Chief, Ngatirahiri and Race Call next to finish. Details of results:— PURUA HACK HURDLES. (Of £150: I mile 4J furlongs). 3—Ethiop (Mr A.
