FASHIONS AT THE RACES

FURS AND WARM COATS June is not usually a temperamental month, but this year she commenced in an unpleasant moon and on Saturday was remarkably uncertain and snappy, with a wind straight from the South Pole, accompanied by heavy rain with frequent showers of hail, spoiling the day for the racegoers who had anticipated a good deal of pieasuie. The Wanganui Jockey Clubs racecourse is usually a pleasant place, but on Saturday not even on the grandstand, which is exposed to the southerly winds, could one find refuge from the bleak wind and extremely cold atmosphere, although many people had brought rugs. Nevertheless the attendance was excellent and as nearly everyone was prepared there was no lack ot enjoy-

ment. Of course, racegoers came prepared for the very wintry conditions. Consequently furs or furtrimmed coats were worn by the majority, while others arrived wearing leathei- coats, raincoats, or rubber capes over their suits and ensembles. Vivid shades in these raincoats and capes, and gay-coloured umbrellas, helped to brighten the general effect. High rubber boots and goloshes were i much in evidence, but there were ' some feminine enthusiasts inade- ■ quately shod in the thinnest and scantiest of court shoes and a few in frail satin shoes which seemed out of

place. There were hosts of well-cut tweed ensembles, costumes and tailored coats. Hats were all shapes, high and low crowns and forward brims, similar to those seen during the past few months, feather mounts and bows being the favourite trimming. There were not so many jauntily set high quills. Scarves and flowers added notes of. brightness to the dressing. One of the most attractive colours in hats seen on the lawn was a new and. soft shade of blue. It was worn I by a young man, whose suit was several shades darker. This innovation in male attire caught the eye' and one heard expressions of approval that a departure from the usual drab colours had al last been made.
