WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

HOSSTON MEETING A good attendance of members and visitors made the June meeting of the Mosston Women’s Institute, held on the Ist., a bright and cheery affair. Mrs Stilborn presided and, after the usual opening exercises, extended a warm welcome to all, mentioning how pleased they were to have Miss Young, federation president, and Mrs Farley, of Makirikiri, with them. Mrs Denman read the record of the previous meeting and Mrs Franklin the treasurer’s statement. The singing circle was granted £1 ss, and £1 was voted to the federation towards delegates’ expenses. Two new members were nominated and given a welcome, and the motto for the month read by Mrs West was “Cheery people help weary people to forget their woes.’’ It was unanimously decided to hold a social evening on Thursday, the 17th. inst., for institute funds. It was also decided to form an arts and crafts circle to meet twice a month, Mrs Lynch being chosen as convenor of same. The roll call, “Sick Room Hints,” drew forth from members both wisdom and humour. A demonstration of a new waterless steam cooker proved interesting. During the social half hour, Mrs Farley spoke very interestingly and wittily of her trip to Honolulu, and members showed keen enjoyment of her talk. The Institute Trio gave an enjoyable item and a dainty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Jackson, Siddells, and Swan. The following were the results of the competitions:—Hospital box, Mrs Brodie 1, Mrs Franklin 2, Mrs Tipper 3. Knitted bed socks, Mrs Brodie 1, Mrs McFarland 2, Mrs Smith 3. The president moved votes of thanks to Mrs Farley, the trio, and Mr Stevens, and the meeting closed with the National Anthem.
