TAIHAPE

» TAIHAPE POLO CLUB The Taihape Polo Club lias ever; reason to feel pleased and gratified with the success that has attended its first year’s operations. The formation of the club a little over a year ago has uone much to encourage a healthy and exhilarating sport in this district A successful opening season concluded with a most enjoyable gymkhana, and prospects for the Future are very bright. The annual meeting of the club was held in Dalgety’s office on Friday evening, when the president (Mr. R. H. Lowry) occupied the chair. Also present were Messrs. J. T. Duncan. W. L. Britton, H. A. Hintz, J. Gilbert. D- Barrell, C. Johnston, D. Broome, G. B. Chrystall and the secretary (Mr. W. R. Duncan).

‘‘We have passed through a successful season and have had a lot of fun,” declared the chairman in a brief review of the past year. Continuing, Mr. Lowry added that the Taihape team had performed with credit at the polo tourney in Hawke's Bay last March and were as good as any in their section with one possible exception.

Referring to the club games played during the season, Mr. cowry saiu that there had not been a single occasion when at least eight playing members had not been in attendance. Mr. J. Duncan: Sixteen would no, be too many.

The chairman: We might nave about 40 or 50 this coming season.

Continuing his review of the season’s activities, the president made reference to the services rendered oy the club captain (Mr. J. T. Duncan), the honorary secretary (Mr. W. R. Duncan), Mr. W. Britton and Mr. C. Johnston. Mr. Johnston was the prime mover in having the club formed, and had it not been for his enterprise there would probably have been no polo in the district. Mr. J. T. Duncan: He fired the first shot. Mr. Lowry went on to say that the club's finances were in very healthy state, especially in view of the fact that there was always a lot ol initial expenditure during the first year of any polo club's existence. The club was most fortunate in securing a good ground and owed a deep debt of gratitude to Mr. W. Britton for placing his property at the club’s disposal. Mr. J. T. Duncan supplemented the chairman’s remarks by stating that special thanks were due to those people who had patronised the game. Thanks was also due to the honorary members, who had made polo possible by supporting the club. Without their support the club would have been unable to carry on. "We cannot provide the spectators with afternoon tea next season, but we will provide hot water so that patrons can make a picnic day of it. Some of our numbers seem to play better when there is a gallery. (Laughter.) We are greatly indebted to those who have given donations to the club and to those who made the sports meeting a success by donations and subscriptions. When the Taihape team went to Napier to compete in the polo tourney we expected to be beaten in our first game. We competed in the junior handicap section and met the scratch team in the first round and beat them by one goal. Our team scored another victory the next day. We met the winners in our fourth game and were beaten by two goals. They were better mounted than we were. We drew with the next team we met. In the last game we threw discretion to the winds and put up a great performance. Everybody talked about our final game and described it as the best match in the junior section. We received a real “pat on the back. The experience they gained in this tourney should stand our team in good stead,” concluded Mr. Duncan. The Taihape team consisted of R. H. Lowry, H. A. Hintz, D Broome, W. R. Duncan, J. T. Duncan. The secretary presented the bal-ance-sheet, which disclosed a credit ol £2l 6s. He explained that there had been a lot of non-recurring expenditure, including £lB for polo sticks. The sum of £2 14s had been contributed to the building fund by Mr. W. Britton. Donations to the cluo, including contributions to the fund foi providing trophies for the sports bad amounted to £l4. Mr. Chrystall: Our finances are very satisfactory and reflect credit an the secretary. I will move that the bal-ance-sheet be adopted. The motion was seconded by Mr. C. Johnston and carried. She is survived by her husband and a large family of young children.
