WANGANUI MATCHES WESLEY OUTCLASSED FIRST ROUND CONCLUDES Y.M.C.A.’S SUBSTANTIAL WIN Wesley suffered their first defeat of the season on Saturday afternoon when the first round of the Wanganui Hockey Association’s 1937 competitions was concluded before a large attendance of spectators. The weather was ideal for hockey and some fairly good games were witnessed. Wesley met Y.M.C.A. and were definitely outclassed, the final score being six goals to one in Y.M.C.A.’s favour. Kauangaroa defeated Technical College by four goals to three after a fairly even (game, the country team thus having I its first win this season. I An interesting game was witnessed in the ladies' A section between Aramoho and Gonville, the former side winning by two goals to one after a closely-contested match. In the ladies' B section, Putiki held Collegians to a 2-0 victory after a bright game. Castlecliff clashed with Tawhero In the men’s junior division, but neither side was able to secure more than two goals, the game ending in a draw. Technical Better stick work and a general improvement was observed in the Kauangaroa side on Saturday afternoon, when Technical .were defeated by four goals to three after an even game. Kauangaroa lost no time in seizing opportunities and using them to advantage, Ratana drawing first* blood and giving Kauangaroa a lead of one point. The college team, on the other hand, had not the combination, but this was due to the fact that several of the usual players were unable to participate on Saturday. Fraser was the next man to score and before half-time Emia had secured another goal for Kauangaroa. Naidu’s goal shortly before the whistle evened the issue. After the change-over, Technical pressed strongly, but were unable to finish their moves, Kauangaroa’s backs being continually on the alert. One of the Larking brothers netted the country team’s next goal, but Naidu was quick to even for Technical. Ten minutes before the finish it appeared as though the game would end in a draw, three-all, but Larking came in quickly from the wing and made no mistake in finding the net. The final score was Kauangaroa 4, Technical College 3. The umpires were Messrs L. R. Spurdie and S. Hughes. Hinemoa v. Technical Old Boys The game opened slightly in Technical Old Boys’ favour, but faulty shooting robbed them of several scoring opportunities. Hinemoa soon pressed and during a hot attack, L. Stewart netted a good goal from a centre. Hinemoa’s forwards were again prominent in an attacking move, but a dangerous situation was relieved by Old Boys' backs. Bright individual play by L. Stewart was responsible for another goal being registered a few minutes later. The same player had a hard shot at goal a fe.v minutes later, but the ball missed the net by inches only. A penalty corner was awarded Hinemoa during a subsequent attack, but Stewart’s shot was neatly stopped by Old Boys’ goalkeeper. At half-time the score was Hinemoa 2, Old Boys 0. Hinemoa attacked strongly during the second half and Old Boys endeavoured to put up a good resistance. L. Stewart, however, was in good scoring mood and from half-way carried the ball right through, netting a sure goal. A few minutes later, during another Hinemoa attack, E. Wallace had a hard shot at goal, but good defensive work by Old Boys goalie relieved the situation. Hinemoa’s next goal was secured by E. Wallace, however, and Technical Old Boys’ first score came from the stick of E. Rumney after a good passing rush. Hine-

moa’s final point was ch’ained by L. Stewart, who goaled from a scramble shortly before the finish. The game ended Hinen oa 5, Technical Old Boys 1. The umpires were Messrs C. A. Condie and R. L. Thompson. Y.M.C.A. v. Wesley Wesley won the toss but elected to play against the sun in the first half and throughout the first 35 minutes of the game were handicapped by a dazzling light. Wesley did not appear to have their usual combination on Saturday, however, and rarely looked dangerous. Y.M.C.A., on the other hand, had a solid team and the forwards played with good cohesion, frequently swamping the Wesley backs. The game was interesting to watch, but not as exciting as was anticipated. Howatson opened the score with a high shot after securing a pass from his right wing. Connett .saved a hot shot sent in by Ransom a few minutes later and was constantly on the alert, but dazzled by the sun. Y.M.C.A.’s second goal was obtained by N. Ransom, who secured a wing pass and made no mistake in finding the net. Wesley then attacked and Tizard had a shot which seemed certain to find the net, but the ball hit the side of the goai and was quickly carried away by the Y.M.C.A. pack. Howatson, from a good run down the centre of the field, secured Y.M.C.A.’s third goal, and before the first spell ended, N. Ransom, from a scramble in the circle, baffled Connett with a quick shot. After the change-over Wesley, now striving against great odds, tried to even the score, but in spite of the fact that they now had the sun against them, Y.M.C.A. continued to press. Their next goal came from Howatson who, after securing a leftwing pass, streaked in another hot shot which caught Connett unawares. (Howjtson was in good form on Saturr 'and after another bright move I Vm th 4 centre of the field netted a .further goal. Toward the finish of | the gamfe Wesley were pressing hard and some exciting play was witnessed in Y.M.C.A. territory. Tizard. from the right, came in with a hard shot, but the ball went wide. Y.M.C.A. immediately endeavoured to take play upfield, but Thrush intervened and tried to find the net, the ball passing over the top. Thrush had another shot, but the ball was stopped by Y.M.C.A.’s goalkeeper and cleared, only to be p'cked up by Tizard, who sent in a beautiful goal and an awkward angle. The game ended Y.M.C.A. 6, Wesley 1. Messrs R. L. Thompson and C. A. Condie were the umpires. Aramoho v. Gonville The A section match between Aramoho and Gonville was the best game played in the women’s section this season. The game opened at a fast pace, Gonville being quickly on the attack and had Aramoho busy defending for some time. Aramoho repulsed the onslaught and took a hand in turning the defence into an attack and keeping Gonville busy for some time. The match was interesting, both teams playing an open game. The first score came from a scramble in the Gonville circle after Gonville had been penalised for obstruction outside the circle. Aramoho 1, Gonville 0. Spurred on by this reverse, Gonville launched a hot attack and after very even play in the centre of the field the ball was passed out to the right wing, the Gonville player making • fast run and drawing the defence nicely, put in a hot centre which was collected by the centre-forward. She sent in a hard shot and gave Aramoho goalie no chance. For the remainder of the spell play was very even, both sides attacking in turn, but neither could penetrate the defence. Half-time was called with the score one all. The second half was still played at a fast pace. Both sides attacked in turn but found that they could not penetrate the defence. After about twenty minutes had gone in the second spell, Aramoho scored again with an excellent shot, making the score 2-1 in Aramoho’s favour. Gonville were now all out after the equalising goal, bit the Aramoho defence still held and after more even play, the Gonville inside right received the ball at half-way and, making a fast sprint through, beating the Aramoho full-backs, went right into the circle with only the Aramoho goalie to beat. Unfortunately, however, she stumbled and fell and what looked like a certain goal was lost, Aramoho clearing from a dangerous position. From then on the play was even, each team attacking in turn, but no further score was registered and Aramoho won by two goals to one after a splendid exhibition by both teams, who are to be congratulated on their display. Messrs W. Upton, snr., and D. Glenny controlled the game.
