TAIHAPE

RUGBY AFFAIRS The management committee of the Taihape Rugby Union met on Monday evening, when there were present: Messrs. John Quirk (chair), W. Pine, R. C. Schofield, C. H. Transom, J. Webb, A. H. Smith, N. Anderson, L. A. Hebberd, W. O’Connor, and the secretary (Mr. C. L. Mullany). A letter was received from the New Zealand Rugby Union asking that all football clubs be invited to contribute £1 Is towards the King George V Memorial Fund, and also to open subscription lists for this purpose. The N.Z. Union also requested that the Taihape sub-Union should add its contribution to the fund. The matter was left in the hands of lhe secretary. The Rangitikei Union wrote asking that the junior match between Taihapc and Rangitikei be played at Marton on June 5, wnich is the date set aside for the senior match between Taihape and Wanganui, at I'aihapc. The date was confirmed for the junior match and Mi W. Pine wae appointed manager of the Taihape junior team, which will travel by the 10 a.m. train. Fixtures for Saturday. Seniors. —Huia v. Pirates; Utiku v. Hautapu. Juniors. —Huia v. Pirates; Utiku v Hautapu. Third Grade.---Town v. School. Full particulars are advertised. Position of Teams. The secretary reported on the position of the senior and junior teams in the competition as follows: Seniors Huia . . S Utiku - - 6 Hautapu 4 Pirates 2 Juniors Pirates 8 Hautapu 7 Utiku 5 Huia 0 Players Ordered Off The referee of the senior match between Utiku and Huia last Saturday (Mr. C. H. Transom) reported having ordered o* T. Thompson (Huia), for abuse, and Takarei (Huia), for kicking a player who was on the ground, without having possession of the bail. The Chan man: The game was a good one and the players were worked up to a high pitch of excitement and some might have “lost their heads.” Nevertheless, there should be no rough play.

Mr. Schofield: I will move that Thompson be suspended for one playing Saturday. Mr. Transom: Thompson accused me of favouring Utiku after I had told him to be quiet. Mr. Smith: It is a serious thing to be ordered off and I doubt if suspension for one playing Saturday is sufficient punishment for any player who is given his “walking ticket.” The Secretary: In view oi the fact that Thompson was ordeicd off early in the first spell and his team was penalised, I think the suggested punishment. is suliic'ent. I certainly agree that any player who qi.es’ ens th? referee’s decision should be ordered off. This sort of thing must be stopped. Mr. Webb: The very fact that the j referee ordered Thompson off is in itiself a stiff punishment. Mr. Schofield’s [motion that Thompson be suspended I for one playing Saturday was carried. Regarding Takarei's case, the referee reported that this player had deliberately kicked Barrell in the back when the latter was not in possession of the ball and was on his knees. Barrell had been tackled by Rangi Chase, when Takarei "put in the boot.” Mr. Hebberd: Barrell didn't have the hall and there was no occasion for the kicking. Mr. Smith moved that Takarei be suspended for Cour playing Saturdays. Mr. Mullany moved an amendment that Takarei be suspended for the remainder of the season, and added that deliberate and indiscriminate kicking should not be tolerated on any account. There had been far too many casualties this season, and footballers were in danger of their lives if incidents like that of last Saturday were allowed to continue. When a man uses his boot without rhyme or reason he should be out for life, declared the speaker. Mr. O’Connor: The previous Satur- | day Chisnail was deliberately kicked I by' a Pirate player, but the culprit was not caught by Hie referee. I will second Mr. Mullany’s amendment. Mr. Schofield: We should make it plain that any further cases of deliberate kicking will entail suspension for the remainder of the season. On being put to the meeting, the amendment was lost and the motion carried. Mr. Mullany reported that Mr. A. Henwood (Rangitikei selector) and !Mr. Ambrose (Wanganui selector) saw last Saturday’s match between Huia and Utiku and said it was as good, if not better, than any game played in Wanganui and Rangitikei this season. They also wished to congratulate Mr. Transom on the efficient way be had refereed the game. THE MAJESTIC DANCE RECITAL AND PICTURES Majestic Theatre patrons will, on Thursday evening, have a treat in store when Wanganui pupils of Miss Andrey Hughes Johnson will give a dance recital in conjunction with the picture "Two in a Crowd,' with Joel McCrea and Joan Bennett. Every child taking part in the performance is a competition winner and will give exhibitions of dancing in all its phases. The programme will consist of oper-
