DRUNK IN CAR
TWO MEN BEFORE COURT t Fer Press Association. I DUNEDIN, May 3. Thadee Slavensxy, a member of the Monte Carlo Russian Ballet, appeared in the Police Court this morning, jointly charged with Maurice Kenunck Whale, of Lyttelton, with bring intoxicated in charge ot a car. The police stated that when the Russian accused was arrested at b p.m. yesterday he was absolu->ly drunk. The other accused had dime irom the north. Meeting the Russian at an hotel, Whale hired a car ana took his new inend tor a drive. It was outside the Caledonian Hotel that they crashed into a pole, both beln ■ injured and requiring some attention at the hospital. Tne Russian was driving when the accident occurred but Vihale’s action showed ’that ne was also drunk, since he asked his companion to take charge or the mgh-powered car, which was oa-ilv smashed. y
Counsel pointed out that it was a disastrous unve tor the Russian. His company left this morning to cau n ■he vessel for Australia, and Slavensky would have to fly to Wellington to catch the boat. Moreover, he had received chest injuries whicn would affect his work.
The magistrate, Mr. Bundle, taking into consideration the fact that thHnAa a h- leavlng New Zealand", fined him £3. Whale was fined £l6 and expenses and his licence was suspended for six months.
