THE PROPOSED CHARGES PROTEST BY SOUTHLAND [ Pet Preet AjeocleUon. ) , INVERCARGILL, May 3. A protest against what was termed exorbitant prices for admission to th< forthcoming Rugby matches with th< South African team was made by th« Southland Rugby Union to-night Members discussed the charges which had been fixed at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union and it was decided to protest that the charges were excessive, and ask that the New Zealand Union reconsider them with a view to having them reduced. The chairman, Mr L. R. Lopdell, said that the charges had been fixed by the Management Committee of the New Zealand Union and adopted by the annual meeting of delegates. The new Council of the New Zealand Union had power to alter them. Mr R. T. Meredith, who is the president of the New Zealand Union, said that he could give no idea how the prices were arrived at. They were introduced by the Management Committee at the annual meeting and about two delegates protested against them. “Apart from the 10s charge, I don't think the other prices ate excessive,” he added. "They are much the same as we charge in interprovincial games. Last year, in some of the interprovinvial games, some people were prepared to pay as much as £3 a seat. We have to remember that wages have gone up and the working man, who received only 8s a day once upon a time, is now getting 18s and. £1 a day. Everything has gone up, including wages.”
