ROWING

INTER-COLLEGE RACE MT. ALBERT AND WANGANUI EVENT FOB TO-MORROW Secondary schools’ rowing has been quietly developing in Auckland during the last 12 months and the first interschools’ race will be held to-morrow, when a crew from Wanganui Technical College will meet a picked crew from Mount Albert Grammar School, which, states the New Zealand Herald, is the pioneer of school rowing on Waitemata Harbour. In Christchurch and Wanganui, rowing is a recognised part of the schools’ sporting curriculum, while the annual inter-schools’ rowing championships are looked upon as one of the main fixtures of the summer season. From the point of view of experience, the Wanganui crew will have had a good deal more than the local four, but the Mount Albert Grammar School representatives are a sturdy lot and are nothing if not keen. Their enthusiasm will offset any inexperience they may have. The Wanganui boys arrived in Auckland yesterday morning and will be the guests of the Mount Albert Grammar School. Mr C. H. Wilson, a master of the school, is manager. The crews will be:—

Wanganui Technical College.—E. Crutchley (stroke), D. Wadsworth, A. Cox, S. McDonald (bow), C. Johnstone (cox). Mount Albert Grammar School.—A. N. White (stroke), D. W. Rollinson, M. R. Reed, D. W. R. White (bow), D. R. Lines (cox). Experienced Coaching Mr L. E. Brooker, well-known University Rugby footballer and New Zealand representative oarsman, has been preparing the Mount Albert four, together with Messrs J. H. Jenkin and H. Calder, masters at the school, who also were university footballers, while the captain of the West End Club has been assisting with training operations. The race will take place on the Tamaki Drive course at 2.15 to-morrow afternoon and a very keen contest is anticipated. The Auckland Rowing Association and the local clubs have been keen to see rowing on the recognised sports curriculum of Auckland schools and run on lines similar to those adopted in Christchurch and Wanganui. The headmaster of the Mount • Albert Grammar School, Mr F. Gamble, early last year approved of the sport being taken up by the boys. Although of necessity the number participating at present is restricted, there is considerable enthusiasm, not only among the present pupils, but also among the old boys, who at the beginning of the season presented a set of 12 new practice oars. This splendid and spontaneous gesture on the part of the old boys has inspired the school and was much appreciated by bo*h the headmaster and the boys. WANGANUI CLUB CREWS FOR TO-MORROV.. The following will represent the Wanganui Rowing Club in the Bethune and Vodanovich Cup races to-morrow: — Bethune Cup.—M. Paul (str.), B. Goldsbury 3, M. Breed 2, R. Grant (bow). Vodanovich Cup.—E. Cooper str., L. Northover 3, A. Graham 2, P. Brodie (bow). The Bethune Cup crew were the winners of the Dustin Fours, and the Vodanovich Cup crew won the Fitzherbert Fours.
