TAXI DRIVERS ON STRIKE

VIOLENCE RESORTED TO BATTLES WITH POLICE. Received March 18, 9.44 p.m. CHICAGO, March 18. The worst outbreak in a 12-day walk-out of 5500 taxj-cab drivers occurred when 200 strikers massed at two points in the Loop district and wrecked cabs, slugged strike-breakers and battled with squads of police while thousands watched from office windows. A single shot was fired by a striker which hit nobody. A mounted policeman, who rode into the mob, was pulled to the ground and beaten. He was rescued when another levelled a shotgun at the crowd. Several passengers were thrown violently from taxi-cabs and others were hit by bricks. Strikers inserted paper in the petrol tank of one cab and ignited it causing an explosion and fire. Windows of others were smashed with lead pipes.
