WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

UPPER WAITOTARA MEETING The Upper Waitotara Women’s Institute held their meeting in the nail on Thursday last, Mrs L. G. Alien presiding. There was a good attendance, and after singing the “Ode to Friendship” and repeating the “Aspirations,” several letters were read and the business of the afternoon dealt with. ' The Taumatitaki and Maranema School Committees agreed to join with the members of the institute and hold a combined picnic on the Saturday, which proved a great success. At the “bring and buy” stall about 10s was made. The points competition “best Jar of apple jelly” was won by Mrs B. J. Annabell, Miss V. Thomas second, and Mrs W. Cowan third. During the social half hour a novelty competition, guessing the names of kitchen utensils, was won by Mrs S. Toswell. The hostesses Mesdames F. Walton and W. Cowar, junr., served a dainty afternoon tea.
