COUNTESS HAIG ARRIVES
GUEST OF NEW ZEALAND FULFILMENT OF A TRUST ( Per Pres* Association. ] WELLINGTON, Feb. 8. Countess Haig*arrived by the Awatea, coming as the guest of the Government on an. invitation signed by the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage. She said in an interview that ths object of her coming was in the nature of the fulfilment of a trust, her husband having intended to visit Australia and New Zealand because he had visited South Africa and Canada, and he most earnestly wished to meet his brave comrades from Australia and New Zealand, who fought undex his leadership, and thank them in person for what they had done anu to urge‘them to join up with the BritLh Empire Service League. The/ haa arranged to come together to Australia and New Zealand in 1928, she said, but her husband passed away in January of that year, and she had been unable to leave her children. She also comes to speak about the book, “The Man I Knew,” all profits from the sale of which are for the benefit of ex-servicemen and their widows and children in each area where they live and where the book is distributed.
Countess Haig is looking forward to her brief stay in New Zealand with great interest, and particular interest to again meeting Sir Clutha Mackenzie, of whom she saw much when he was at St. Dunstan’s.
